Jordan Cox and 20-year-old batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell will make their England debuts in the opening T20 match against Australia on Wednesday in Southampton. Jamie Overton is also set to play his first T20 for England, adding to his single Test cap earned against New Zealand in 2022.
Fast bowler Saqib Mahmood returns to the England setup for the first time since March 2023, following his recovery from a second stress fracture in his back. This T20 series, consisting of three matches, will be followed by five one-day internationals. England has opted for a youthful squad, signaling a focus on building for the future after losing both their T20 and 50-over world titles in the past 10 months.
Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim coach for the series, stepping in after Matthew Mott’s departure earlier this summer. Brendon McCullum, who has been appointed as England’s permanent head coach, will take on the white-ball role in addition to his Test coaching duties starting in the new year. Phil Salt will captain the team for the T20s, stepping in for regular skipper Jos Buttler, who is sidelined due to injury.
England XI for First T20I: Phil Salt (captain/wicket-keeper), Will Jacks, Jordan Cox, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood, Reece Topley.
