Martin Guptill Confirms Retirement From International Cricket

The 38-year-old New Zealand’s opening batsman Martin Guptill has officially taken retirement from global cricket. He will no longer play international games such as One Day Internationals, T20 or test cricket.
It is important to know that he stopped appearing for official international matches between New Zealand and other countries from October 2022 onwards. It was only on January 8, 2025, that he officially announced that he would no longer play international games. He released a heartfelt video thanking his coaches and family for all their support.
Martin's Journey So Far
Martin Guptill is one of the best cricketers from New Zealand. He played 198 ODIs for his country, scoring 7346 scores in total. He became the third-highest run-scorer behind Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming in One Day Internationals. Guptill is the highest run-scorer in T20Is for New Zealand with 3531 runs from 122 matches. His average is 31.81 score per match and a strike rate of 135.70.
In test games, he had scored 2586 score in 47 matches. Talking about his achievements, he scored 547 runs in the 2015 World Cup, which proved to be a turning point as New Zealand went on to play the final. Also, his record of 237 scores in 163 balls against West Indies in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final is the second-highest individual score in ODI history.
Guptill's Words About His Retirement
Martin shared about his career and said that it had always been his dream as a young boy to play for New Zealand. He expressed his pride and gratitude for representing his country in 367 games. His last appearance in international games as a representative of NZ was in 2022. Also, he would never forget wearing the silver fern and playing alongside his teammates.
He thanked his colleagues and coaching staff, especially Mark O'Donnell, whom Martin has worked with since the Under-19 stage. He also recognized his manager, Leanne McGoldrick, for all that she did behind the camera. Martin expressed his gratitude to his wife, Laura, and their two children, Harley and Teddy. His wife has made various sacrifices for their family. Finally, he thanked the cricket fans in New Zealand and all around the world for their support of the year.
What Will Martin Do Now
Even though he has now taken his leave from the International matches, he is still in the system. He will play for Auckland in Super Smash. Also, he has signed up for the PSL draft where Islamabad United may choose to retain him.
