Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials have announced that a decision on Shakib Al Hasan's availability for the Kanpur Test will be made following a medical assessment. Shakib sustained a finger injury while batting during the first Test against India in Chennai after being struck by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. The all-rounder required on-field treatment but completed his innings.
"We’re traveling to Kanpur tomorrow (Tuesday), and today is a rest day. We’ll have two practice sessions after that, and we’ll decide on Shakib’s availability for the second Test based on those," said Hannan Sarkar, a member of BCB's selection panel, during a media interaction on Monday.
"Shakib is under observation by the physio, and once we’re back in training, we’ll get a clearer picture of his condition. We’ll assess the situation carefully before making a final call, as there’s still time before the next match," he added.
Najmul Hossain Shanto Clears Air on Shakib’s Fitness Issues
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain downplayed concerns over Shakib's injury, noting that the left-arm spinner was not used as a bowler in Chennai because other bowlers were performing well, not due to any serious injury issue. Hannan supported this, clarifying that Shakib had no fitness concerns leading into the opening Test.
"We know there’s been a lot of talk about the discomfort in his hand, but he was completely fit before the match. The physio gave us full clearance, and Shakib was 100 percent ready to play," Hannan explained.
The discomfort only became apparent when Shakib began bowling during the match, but according to Hannan, it should not be classified as an injury. "What he felt in his finger wasn’t present before the game; it only emerged later," he said.
A final decision on Shakib's participation in the second Test will be made after further evaluation and this could result a change in the betting odds offered by the best cricket betting sites as India will be highly favoured in Shakib's absence.
