Tamim Iqbal Undergoes Angioplasty After Heart Attack During DPL Match

Tamim Iqbal, former Bangladesh captain, suffered a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Savar on March 24, 2025. He was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club but could only field for one over before leaving the ground due to chest discomfort.
Swift Medical Intervention Saves Tamim’s Life
After experiencing discomfort, Tamim headed to KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing Home, where doctors advised him to stay. However, he returned to the ground despite their concerns. When his condition worsened, the Mohammedan team physio had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him before rushing him back to the hospital.
Upon arrival, Tamim was in critical condition. Tests revealed a blockage in his arteries, leading to an emergency angioplasty performed by cardiologist Dr. Moniruzzaman Maruf. According to Dr. Rajib Hasan from KPJ Hospital, the surgery went smoothly, and Tamim is now under observation in the coronary care unit (CCU) for 48 hours. The swift coordination between the BKSP medical staff and the hospital ensured prompt treatment.
Tamim Regains Consciousness
BCB’s chief physician, Dr. Debashis Chowdhury, confirmed that Tamim had regained consciousness and his vital signs were improving. “His overall health is expected to get better in the next 24 hours,” Dr. Chowdhury stated. The hospital reported that a ring was placed in one of his arteries while the others were found to be healthy.
BCB Officials and Teammates Visit Tamim
Following the news, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cancelled a scheduled directors’ meeting. President Faruque Ahmed, chief executive Nizamuddin Ahmed, and director Akram Khan, Tamim’s uncle, rushed to the hospital to check on his condition. Later, his Mohammedan team-mates Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Taijul Islam also visited him.
Tamim’s Recent Cricket Achievements
Despite retiring from international cricket in January 2025, Tamim has continued playing domestic cricket. He recently led the Fortune Barishal franchise to its second consecutive BPL title and scored two centuries in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League, guiding Mohammedan Sporting Club to six wins in eight matches.
