Australia take on Pakistan at the scenic setting in Adelaide Oval on Friday in what will be a key contest for the tourists.
Despite coming close to pulling off a heist in the first game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Pakistan need to regroup quickly and focus all their efforts into stopping a second-string Aussie side.
The MCG victory was Australia’s second straight victory against the Asian side, and the hosts will be keen on wrapping up the series with several test stars all set to leave for their prep camp for the Border Gavaskar trophy.
For Pakistan, it will be a great opportunity to test different players at different slots, as their preparation for the champions trophy at home intensifies.
Australia huffed and puffed their way to a difficult, tense victory, courtesy captain Pat Cummins’ brave knock in the end. Pakistani pace bowlers hit their stride in the middle of their bowling innings, consistently targeting the right line and length on a typical MCG wicket to leave the Aussie batters scrambling. The Aussie bowlers had made good use of the conditions to trouble the visitors batting unit, restricting them to a total just a shade over 200.
The target was chaseable, and it looked like a formality when Steve Smith and Josh Inglis were going about their business, but the collapse started with both of them removed. The lower middle order looked clueless against quality pace attack but a brave effort from Captain Pat got them over the line. With the test stars leaving for their Border Gavaskar trophy prep, the hosts wouldn’t want to leave it too late.
They were not overly convincing to watch with the bat in the first game, but the batters would be hoping to put in a strong performance to snatch a win and seal the series. New opening pair Matt Short and Jake Fraser McGurk would be keen on putting together a good stand for the first wicket, after failing in game one.

The visitors were clearly found out by the Aussie pacers, and barring a couple of good innings from Babar Azam, no other Pakistani batter could bat with surety. The pace at which they went about scoring runs was definitely a concern, and they can’t afford to do that against an Aussie side which has got some hard-hitting batsmen in their ranks.
Pakistani pacers bowled out of their skin to make a fist of it in the first game, especially Harris Rauf cranking it up at good consistency. Mohd. Hasnain also kept things neat and tight, but Shaheen Shah Afridi couldn’t quite match their performance though. Pakistan will be hopeful that their batters turn up and put in a clinical display with the bat just to give their bowlers a better chance of testing the Aussie batsmen.
They will have their task cut out containing the new batting pair Matt Short and Jake Fraser McGurk, who are natural ball strikers and show great inclination to attack and take the game on from the word get-go.

Adelaide has been one of the best pitches in Australia for batting, but run scoring has been a touch difficult of late in the Sheffield Shield. The short square boundaries will make batters rejoice, especially if the conditions are as flat as it gets here. Weather forecast indicates some shower in the morning, but it should clear up with sunny conditions expected to return for most of the afternoon. Play to remain unaffected.
The match will take place at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. Australia enjoy taking on oppositions at this ground, where they have won 7 and lost 3 in the last 10 games.
Toss doesn’t play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the match, but teams, especially the hosts, have had a lot of success chasing down a target. We reckon both captains would want to bowl first upon winning toss.
Australia stuttered chasing an easy score, showing potential concerns in the middle order. But the team will want to shake it off and focus on playing as a group, which they do best. Australia to win.
We are backing Australia as winners of this contest.
