World champions England haven’t had the best of form in the format in recent times, having lost three of their last four ODI series. Jos Buttler will now lead the side on their limited-overs tour of Bangladesh, which begins on the 1st of March at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. England will be without a few key players, but will still be confident of their chances as they have a terrific record against the hosts in ODIs. This series will also present them with a final opportunity to practice in sub-continent conditions before the ODI World Cup in India later this year.
Bangladesh at home are a force to be reckoned with in all formats. They have won their last seven home ODI series, including one against India in December last year. The Tigers will certainly believe they can take down the world champs in their own backyard, given their opponent’s poor recent ODI form.
Tamim Iqbal has returned to the side after missing the series against India due to injury. The experienced opener is Bangladesh’s most prolific batter, having amassed over 8000 runs in ODIs at an average of 37. He’s also Bangladesh’s highest run-getter against England in ODIs with 488 runs in 14 innings at an average of 34.85. Litton Das is the man in form for Bangladesh. He scored 577 runs in 13 ODIs in 2022 at an average of 52.45.
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will again be a vital part of this side, both with the bat and the ball, and his form will be crucial for the team’s chances in this series. The experienced Mushfiqur Rahim averages 44 against England in 50-over cricket with 485 runs in 12 games.
On the bowling front, Bangladesh will depend on the vastly improved Taskin Ahmed and the ever-reliable Mustafizur Rahman to take the wickets up front. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s off-breaks will also come in handy on this surface during the middle overs along with the guile of Shakib.
Tamim Iqbal (c), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim(wk), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain
England have had a rather torrid time in ODIs recently, losing eight of their last 11 games. They are coming into this series without plenty of their format regulars. Sam Billings, Alex Hales, and Liam Dawson have opted out of the tour because of their PSL commitments. Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, meanwhile, remain unavailable due to injury. However, the world champs still have solid depth in the squad.
Captain Jos Buttler, who has 382 runs in his last 9 matches at an average of 54.57, will be the key player for the tourists. He is in terrific form and will enjoy batting on these pitches. Dawid Malan (325 runs in the last 6 matches at an average of 54.16) is another batter to watch out for. Jason Roy is dangerous and if gets going on this pitch, he will take the game away very quickly.
Also, keep an eye out for Phil Salt. the dashing young batter has made an exciting start to his career and already average 45 in ODIs at a strike rate of 132.24.
The series will also be a test for Jofra Archer. The fast bowler recently made a return to cricket after a long injury layoff and picked up career-best figures of 6-40 against South Africa at Kimberley on the 1st of February. The Bangladesh batters will also need to be wary of Mark Wood and Sam Curran, who are both in good form.
Jos Buttler (c and wk), Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Dawid Malan, Phil Salt, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood
The pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka is traditionally a good surface to bat on. The ball does seam around initially, but batters will have their chance to plunder runs once they see off the first few overs. The pitch here is a spinners' paradise, with the ball gripping and turning often. Spin bowlers will hence have a huge role to play, particularly when the pitch slows down a little.
The weather in Dhaka during the match will be hot during the afternoon but will become cooler in the second half.
The average score batting first at the Shere Bangla National Stadium is 235. It comes down to 201 in the second innings. The highest total posted at the venue is 370-5 by India. Totals between 250-299 have been achieved 42 times here in 84 ODIs. The team batting first should look to set a target of around 270-285 runs.
This is the first match of the series and the pitch will be fresh and hard. The team winning the toss is expected to bat first.
England hold a 17-4 head-to-head record against Bangladesh in ODIs. Moreover, they have also beaten Bangladesh four times in their last five meetings with them. Another point worth noting is that England have clashed four times against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in ODIs and have won three of those games. That said, the Tigers have been excellent in 50-over cricket in recent times and won’t go down easily at home. Their incredible batting depth, in particular, may prove to be a problem for the visitors. England may have lost plenty of ODIs of late but they haven’t exactly looked out of sorts. And despite being short-stocked, their all-round balance gives them the edge against the home side.
We are backing England as the winners of this match.
