The first weekend of the Ford Trophy is always one which cricket lovers in New Zealand and the rest of the world look forward to as the country is synonymous with white ball success and making hard-working cricketers successful!
Although neither Central Stags or Wellington Firebirds went all the way to the final during the 2024/25 season, both teams will feel they have a chance to either reach the final or maybe even to lift the trophy this time around.
Pukekura Park in New Plymouth will host the game and we can expect a large number of home supporters to attend.
Both sides will be keen to get this season off to a flying start and an attacking contest is predicted!

Central Stags are the type of team who like to pile the runs on and they have plenty of experienced batters in their side who may well be able to do this in this match this weekend.
At the top of the order, keeper-batter Dane Cleaver has been dominating bowling attacks for years and along with Jack Boyle, Tom Bruce and Curtis Heaphy are serious players at this level.
Central Stags lack runs down the order though, something which contributed to their inability to make the final in 2024/25 and so we can expect a similar haul this time around.
With the ball, Blair Tickner, Brett Randell and Jayden Lennox look likely to be the main threats!

Wellington won only four of their ten matches during the 2024/25 Ford Trophy season and improving on that will be a priority for Nick Kelly's side across the group stage of this season.
Tim Robinson is a very experienced and high quality opener and his returns will set the tone for the team at the top of the order.
They also have a very strong middle-order where Muhammad Abbas, skipper Kelly, and Tom Blundell can be found, the latter who is likely to be very flexible in terms of his batting position this season.
With the ball, Liam Dudding, Adam Milne and Logan Van Beek make an exceptional trio and they should be able to exploit any bowler friendly conditions in this game.

It is going to be a very dark and dreary day in New Plymouth with the temperature no higher than 15 degrees even at the height of the afternoon. There will also be a chance of some rain at times.
Pukekura Park is a pitch which often at this stage of the season will have a large layer of grass on the top so will very much attract the attacking pace bowlers. Any score of 250+ should be enough to win the match.
The conditions look likely to favour the teams bowling throughout Saturday in New Plymouth so our prediction is that both teams will want to bowl first in this game.
Wellington Firebirds are one of the teams from last season who under-performed and this game will be a good barometer of where they are for this campaign. We predict that Central Stags will have enough to come out on top in this clash.
We are backing Central Stags to win!
