Essex Women head into the contest against Lancashire Women on the back of a nail-biting win over Yorkshire Women in their last match at Headingley, Leeds. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Essex managed to score 146/7 in 20 overs.
They started off well, scoring 60 runs in the first seven overs. However, Alice Macleod (20 runs) was then rattled down the leg side, and just three balls later, Cordelia Griffith was also dismissed as Essex were rocked by back-to-back wickets. Jodi Grewcock (26 runs) steadied the innings from one end during the middle overs, while their skipper, Grace Scrivens, scored 53 runs off 40 balls.
Despite this, Essex again lost wickets at regular intervals between the 13th and 15th overs, reducing them to 97/5. Ultimately, a handy knock from Sophia Smale in the death overs, where she scored 21 runs off 18 balls, powered Essex to a challenging total that they could defend.
Defending 147 runs, Essex looked well and truly out of the game as Yorkshire Women sat in a commanding position at 88/3 after 12 overs, needing just over a run a ball. What followed, however, was a dramatic turnaround. The Essex spinners kept squeezing the runs, leaving them with only 8 runs to defend in the final over. Jodi Grewcock remained calm under pressure, picking up two wickets to bundle out Yorkshire for 143 runs.
Eva Gray, on her return to the side, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/25. Sophia Smale and Grace Scrivens picked up two wickets each, while Joanne Gardner chipped in with one wicket.
Essex possesses one of the best top order this season, with most of their runs coming from them. While the middle order is still finding its groove, the return of Eva Gray and the team playing at their absolute best from the start further establishes Essex as a really strong side entering their second home game of the season at Chelmsford.

After a couple of losses to begin the season, Lancashire Women roared back with a dominant 7-wicket victory over Somerset Women in their last match at Old Trafford. It was a perfect game for The Roses side as they look to keep that momentum going heading into their game against Essex at Chelmsford.
Bowling first, Lancashire Women restricted Somerset Women to 137/6 in 20 overs—a clinical performance with the ball from their bowlers, led by left-arm spinner Hannah Jones, who finished with figures of 3/20. Two of those three wickets were Somerset's top-order batters, while Grace Johnson, Vinali Weerappuli, and Fi Morris chipped in with a wicket each.
Then, chasing down 138 runs, Lancashire's new opening pair of Meg Lanning (75* runs off 48 balls) and Eve Jones (43 runs off 31 balls) added 98 runs in 10.4 overs for the first wicket. Although they lost two wickets in the span of two balls, Grace Johnson walked out and scored 16 runs off 12 balls, steering her side over the line.
