The 5th and final match of the five-match ODI series between hosts Ireland and Afghanistan will be played this Friday, August 14 at the Civil Service Cricket Club Ground in Belfast.
Visitors Afghanistan have had a grip in this series from the very first game played a few days back. The first match at the Bready Cricket Club Ground was abandoned but what followed was Afghanistan's dominance over the hosts, winning all of the next three games, taking an unassailable lead, also securing their ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 berth during the series.
As for Ireland, the hosts would be devastated with the performance so far. They got into the series with a high morale following a T20I series win against India prior to the series.
Batters and bowlers have equally been not upto the mark with veterans like captain Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie and Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker all letting down with the bat. Bowlers have shown some fight, but eventually Afghanistan have been the superior side.

Hosts Ireland trail 0-3 in the five-match ODI series against Afghanistan after consecutive defeats in the second, third and fourth matches. All they can hope for is a consolation victory in the 5th ODI to end the series on a high note.
It's been a difficult series for the Irish batters. Some big names have failed dramatically. Without a doubt, Ireland's best batting performance in the series arrived only in the most recent 4th ODI.
Across the three completed games, Andrew Balbirnie has been Ireland’s leading run-scorer with 152 runs. The experienced batter scored 36 runs in the 2nd game and scored a century in the 4th ODI, 109 runs off 119 balls in a failed chase attempt.
All-rounder Curtis Campher has contributed 111 and Cade Carmichael has scored 99. Campher also played a valiant role in the 4th ODI, taking the hosts really close to the target with a brilliant knock of 84 runs off 46 balls at a strike rate of 182.61. Carmichael meanwhile, scored a half-century in the 2nd ODI match but was below par in the following two matches.
However, the disappointing story from this series for Ireland is the inability of Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker and Ben Calitz not getting the runs on board. Captain Paul Stirling scored 55 runs with his best performance only 27 runs in the 4th ODI. Tector scored 53 while Benjamin Calitz and Tucker scored only 47 and 33 runs respectively.
With the ball, Gavin Hoey has been the standout performer with 7 wickets, while Mark Adair has taken 6 wickets. Hoey got only one wicket in the 2nd ODI but followed it with a 4-fer and 2 wickets in the last game. Adair meanwhile, got 2 apiece in every game.
Byron McDonough with his 3-fer in the last game has extended his wickets-tally to 4 wickets in this series and Jai Moondra has also claimed 2 wickets, but the attack has found it difficult to contain Afghanistan’s top order.

Afghanistan hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series against Ireland and will look to complete a clean sweep when the sides meet in the final match.
Afghanistan have been in great touch with the bat and ball in this series. They have excelled in both fronts. Sediqullah Atal has been the series’ leading run-scorer with 215 runs from three innings. He has consistently put up great scores in all three games.
He started the series with 45 runs off 50 balls in the 2nd ODI, continued his brilliant form with 27 runs in the following game and in the last game, he took his performance up a notch, recording his career best 143 runs off 120 balls in the 4th ODI.
He is closely followed by Ibrahim Zadran with 203 runs. The 24-year-old batter just barely missed out on a century in the 2nd ODI getting out for 84 runs off 97 balls but he finally reached the milestone in the 4th ODI, scoring 107 runs off 118 balls.
Other Afghan opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz has contributed 115, while Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan have also made valuable scores.
Rashid Khan has been exceptional with the ball, taking 12 wickets across the three matches and earning multiple Player of the Match awards. Yamin Ahmadzai claimed 6 wickets, Azmatullah Omarzai got five and Allah Ghazanfar took 4 wickets so far. The bowling unit has been clinical and well balanced.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah (C), Darwish Rasooli, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Allah Ghazanfar, Yamin Ahmadzai, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

The pre-match weather forecast says cloudy to overcast skies are expected. The temperatures on the day could reach a high of around 18-20°C. Light to moderate winds are likely at approx 10 kmph. There is a 20-30% probability of precipitation, so there are slim chances of rain only.
The pitch is a typical Irish surface that usually offers early assistance to seamers with swing and seam movement, especially under cloudy or overcast conditions. Bounce is generally true. As the match progresses and any moisture evaporates, the track can slow down slightly, bringing spinners into play.
The captain who wins the toss, could opt to bat first. The surface at the Civil Service Ground has the best batting conditions at the start of the game. As the moisture starts to evaporate, it starts to slow, bringing a change of pace and spin bowlers into the game.
Afghanistan are clear favourites to complete a 4-0 series clean sweep. Already leading 3-0, they have dominated with Sediqullah Atal (215 runs), Ibrahim Zadran (203) in great form and Rashid Khan bagging outstanding 12 wickets in the series. Ireland showed improved fight in the fourth ODI through Andrew Balbirnie’s century and Curtis Campher’s cameo, but the visitors’ superior quality should secure another victory.
