Ireland face up against Pakistan in the first of the three T20 internationals with just a month to go for the T20 world cup in the West Indies and United States. Paul Stirling’s men will be hoping to compete well against a strong Pakistan squad at home, and get some confidence before they take off for their world cup campaign.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will be looking at Ireland series as a prep for the England leg of the tour that follows shortly. Both teams haven’t met each other in this format for almost 15 years now. Pakistan emerged winners in their last and only meeting in 2009 at The Oval.
Two players from that match have been picked for the series: Paul Stirling for Ireland, and Mohammed Amir for Pakistan. While Stirling will take the field on Friday, Amir’s participation in the first match and for the rest of the series is highly unlikely owing to visa concerns.
Ireland get to play their first T20 game in nearly two months after the Afghanistan series in the UAE. Despite winning the first match of the series, the Irish squandered a great opportunity to claim a series win by defeating the Afghans in the second match, but they came up short by 10 runs in the end.
However, they saved the worst for the decider and lost the match by 57 runs. In their previous series against Zimbabwe, they did well to come back from a loss in the first match to win the series 2-1 though. Paul Stirling and his men will be pumped about this series against Pakistan. The lads will be looking to get back to cricketing action and work up some momentum before they head out for the world cup, which is due to commence in just a month’s time.
Former captain Andy Balbirnie will hope to play a key role in the top order alongside Paul Stirling. Batsmen Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker offer solidity to the middle order, while a number of all-rounders will be keen on contributing with both bat and ball namely Curtis Campher, Mark Adair, Gareth Delany and George Dockrell. The Irish pace attack will miss the services of left-armer Josh Little, who is away playing IPL.

Having managed to draw a series against New Zealand at home, Pakistan will be aiming for a 3-0 win in this series before they travel to England for another T20 series with the defending champions. Haris Rauf, and Mohd. Rizwan come back into the mix, with Usama Mir and Zaman Khan omitted from the squad of players picked for the New Zealand series.
After being reinstated as the white-ball captain, Babar Azam showed he’s dependable as ever scoring 125 runs from 5 matches with a high score of 69. Only Fakhar Zaman from the Pakistani camp managed to accumulate more than 100 runs, while Shadab Khan, Usman Khan and Saim Ayub found it difficult to hit their stride following a brilliant PSL.
With the ball, Shaheen Shah Afridi was impressive picking up 8 wickets from 4 matches, with his 4/30 in the final T20i proving to be the difference between a series win and loss. Abbas Afridi also made an impression with his bowling, taking 5 wickets from 3 matches. After a poor few months, Haris Rauf inclusion in the squad has become a big talking point, but the fiery fast bowler will be hoping to silence his critics with some good performances on the field.

The pitch isn’t exactly a batting haven, and teams have struggled to score above 150 here. As with most Irish wickets, pacers can enjoy some friendly conditions for seam and swing bowling up front. With some cloud cover forecast for game day, the wicket should behave just as expected and offer assistance to bowlers early on.
This match will be played at the Castle Avenue in Dublin which last hosted a T20I in August 2021. Ireland have won 1 and lost 1 in their 2 matches at this venue, with a high score of 153 and a low score of 114.
Batting first or second after winning the toss doesn’t have any distinct advantage at this venue, so both team captains will go in with an open mind and make a decision after assessing the conditions on offer.
Pakistan all the way. Ireland, if they play at their optimal best, can come close to competing well, but Pakistan given their superiority in this format should stave off any challenge and go on to pick up a win.
We are backing Pakistan as winners of this contest.
