Sri Lanka will be hosting Australia for a 2-match Test series followed by a 2-match ODI series. Steve Smith will be leading Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins. Sean Abbott makes it to the Aussie squad as a replacement for the fast-bowling skipper.

The hosts have a strong overall squad featuring all of their key players. The stars of their recent series win against New Zealand at home have all made it to the squad.

There is a lot of experience in this batting lineup along with depth. The middle and lower middle order features some solid batters who can make it difficult for the Aussies to bowl Sri Lanka out.

For the visiting side, both Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney have found a spot in the squad along with all-rounders Cooper Connolly and Beau Webster. Australia have come here with 3 spinners to gear themselves for the Sri Lankan conditions.

Batting first will be crucial at this venue. As the match progresses, spinners will come into play and have the upper hand towards the last two days of the match.

Sri Lanka Preview

Sri Lanka are coming into this series on the back of a series loss in South Africa. They lost both their games against the Proteas by quite a big margin. Both batters and bowlers failed to capitalize on crucial moments during the series.

The left-arm orthodox bowler Prabath Jayasuriya will play a key role for the hosts. He’s been among the consistent wicket-takers and makes a huge impact with the ball.

Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara are other reliable wicket-takers in this squad. While there is great variety in the bowling attack, these 3 along with Vishwa Fernando will be the ones to watch out for.

The batting was a huge disappointment in South Africa. However, now they are back to home conditions and we expect them to flourish in these conditions.

Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne will open the innings while Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Matthews, and Kamindu Mendis play a key role in the middle order.

It looks like a solid batting lineup with plenty of experience and young talent at key positions. Sri Lanka will pose a very tough challenge to the visitors with both bat and ball.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI:

Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (c), Kusal Mendis (wk), Lahiru Kumara, Prabath Jayasuriya, Nishan Peiris, Asitha Fernando

Sri Lanka Actual Playing XI:

Dimuth Karunaratne, Oshada Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Jeffrey Vandersay, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando, Nishan Peiris

Australia Preview

Australia secured the WTC final spot after beating India at home in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. They will be confident after the big win and though they are without their regular captain, the Aussies have their core intact in this series.

They’ve got many in-form and promising batters. However, the likes of Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne will also be put to the test on this tour. The senior players in this team were under the scanner after their first loss at home against India.

Usman Khawaja is one to watch out for. He’s towards the end of his career and will need to score big to keep his position in the side. Labuschange was also out of form before he scored a couple of crucial fifties against India.

Playing in the sub-continent is a big challenge and the likes of Khawaja, Smith, and Labuschagne will be expected to lead the Aussies with the bat. Beau Webster showed great promise against India with both bat and ball.

He’s a quality batter and looked very confident in his stroke-making. Alex Carey and Josh Inglis are the two keeper-batters in the squad. Australia are bringing in a solid team and we reckon they will trouble the hosts.

This is going to be a much different series for the Aussies than their previous tours to Sri Lanka. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland are the key wicket-takers who could trouble the Sri Lankan top-order while Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy will be expected to give Sri Lanka a taste of their own medicine once the pitch starts turning.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Steve Smith (c), Marnus Labuschagne, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy

Australia Actual Playing XI:

Usman Khawaja, Travis Head, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Beau Webster, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Todd Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon

Weather Conditions

It will be cloudy on Day 1 of the Test followed by a rain prediction for the remaining days of the Test. It is not a good news for cricket fans. Light rain is expected on Day 2 and 3 followed by a heavy thunderstorm on the 4th day of the match.

SL vs AUS Pitch Report

It is a balanced wicket that offers help for the batters on the first couple of days of the match. Sri Lanka scored 602 for 5 in their last outing here against New Zealand after opting to bat first. The average 1st innings score at this venue is 369 runs but it gets much lower in the 3rd and 4th innings. We reckon anything around 400 or more in the 1st innings will be a match-winning total.

Toss: To Bat

Teams batting first have won 25 of the 46 Test matches played at this venue. The last time Sri Lanka played a Test here, they won by an innings and 154 runs. Chasing is not going to be easy on this ground in the last two days. Both skippers will look to bat first in this match.

Sri Lanka does have a home advantage on their side. However, the visitors pack a strong punch with their squad strength and current form of key players. It will be a close contest between the two sides if the weather permits. Considering the rain forecast, the Test is likely to end in a draw. Australia will start as favorites to win in our match prediction.
