The 2nd Test match of the 2-Test Series between hosts Sri Lanka and Team India will be played from August 23 onwards. The game will be played at the Sinhalese Cricket Ground in Colombo from 10 a.m. onwards.

The first Test was a dramatic one where both sides displayed some really good cricket with rain also playing a part. But eventually, Team India won the game by 165 runs on Day 5.

With that defeat, any hope of Sri Lanka to qualify into the World Test Championship 2025-2027 final is over. Team India though remain in the fight by barest of margins. For the Gautam Gambhir coached side, almost every Test match from here on is must.

Sri Lanka Preview

Hosts Sri Lanka displayed a resilient display in the 1st Test at Galle, putting-up a solid performance against a very strong Team India. But eventually they fell short on the final day, losing by 165 runs in pursuit of 372 runs.

In the first innings at Galle, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 284 runs in pursuit of Team India’s first innings total of 462 runs. Sonal Dinusha led the way with a well-compiled century (100), while Niroshan Dickwella contributed a solid 80.

Captain Dhananjaya de Silva and other middle-order batters provided useful support, but the side was unable to match India’s substantial first-innings total.

Sri Lanka’s second innings produced only 206 while chasing 372. Sonal Dinusha again stood out with 84, and Dhananjaya de Silva scored a patient 59. However, the lower order struggled to build on these contributions against the Indian spinners.

With the ball, Prabath Jayasuriya was among the more effective bowlers, taking 4 wickets in the first and a further three in the second innings, making full use of the spin-friendly conditions.

Meanwhile Asitha Fernando claimed 4 wickets in India’s second innings. The bowling attack worked hard on a spin-friendly surface but could not prevent India from posting a commanding first-innings score of 462 although it was definitely a much better display in the 2nd innings.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI:

Nishan Madushka, Lahiru Udara, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando.

India Preview

Team India is on the long road to try and qualify into the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027 Final to be played in mid-2027. They are scheduled to face several challenges and just about passed the first obstacle against Sri Lanka.

Shubman Gill led Team India, took a 1-0 lead in the two match Test series with a 165 runs win in the 1st Test. But it wasn't just a smooth ride, Sri Lanka gave them a proper challenge with rain also playing a part and at a time, it looked like the game could end in a draw, but Team India just about dismantled Sri Lanka’s batting line-up with Manav Suthar’s spin bowling brilliance.

In the first innings, India posted a formidable 462 runs on the board. Devdutt Padikkal was the standout performer with a brilliant innings of 167 runs, building some solid partnerships with captain Shubman Gill, Pant and Rahul. He also scored 44 runs in the 2nd innings, earning him the Player of the Match award.

KL Rahul contributed a composed 82 runs, while other batters built on the solid platform to put the visitors in a strong position. Dhruv Jurel scored a half-century while the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Manav Suthar added valuable runs.

India’s second innings yielded 193. Rishabh Pant top-scored with an aggressive 66 off 69 balls, providing the bulk of the runs as the side set Sri Lanka a challenging target of 372.

With the ball, Manav Suthar was exceptional, taking 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second for a match haul of 10 wickets. Ravindra Jadeja claimed three wickets in the first innings, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna provided useful support with the new ball and in the middle overs.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubhman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna.

Weather Conditions

During the game, expect warm, humid tropical conditions with mostly cloudy skies. Daytime high temperature is likely to touch 29° C. There is a 40-50% probability of precipitation, making frequent chances of rain or thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, so rain interruptions are quite possible.

SL vs IND Pitch Report

The pitch is typically a classic Sri Lankan surface. It starts relatively flat and batting-friendly with consistent bounce, allowing teams to post substantial first-innings totals. As the match progresses, the surface wears, offering significant turn and variable bounce that strongly favours spinners from Day 3 onwards. Pacers may get limited early assistance with the new ball. Batting first is usually advantageous, and fourth-innings chases can be challenging.

Toss: To Bat

The captain who win the toss is likely to opt to bat first. The surface at the ground is at its best on day 1-2 and starts to aid the spinners from day 3 onwards. Putting the runs on board batting first is going to be the way.

Team India is once again the favourite to win the 2nd Test in Colombo. Despite Sri Lanka’s resilient fight in the last game, Team India have the outright better quality of players and depth. With Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja’s spin brilliance they can really attack the Sri Lankan batters in spin-friendly conditions while the likes of Devdutt Padikkal and KL Rahul have a strong foundation against spin. Overall, Team India is set to win this game on pure quality.
