The MLC 2025 Qualifier 1 between Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom was called off after rain washed out play, with only the toss completed. With no reserve day on the calendar, Washington moved to the final after finishing first in the league standings. Texas will now take part in the Challenger.
It must have been frustrating for the Super Kings, but they have it in them to still reach the finals. Both their batting and bowling have delivered this season.
Faf du Plessis has delivered at the top, piling up 409 runs in nine games at an average of 51.12 and a strike rate of 175.33. His unbeaten 91 from 52 balls in the last league match against Seattle Orcas showed just how much damage he can do once he finds his rhythm.
Shubham Ranjane and Donovan Ferreira have anchored the middle well, each scoring over 210 runs and keeping the scoreboard ticking.
Saiteja Mukkamalla has had brief spells of promise but has not quite pulled off a full contribution with the bat. With the stakes getting higher, Texas will need more from him.
The bowling unit has had its bright patches, though putting together complete efforts has been tough. Noor Ahmad and Adam Milne have taken 14 wickets apiece. Zia-ul-Haq and Nandre Burger have picked up 13 between them. Akeal Hosein has looked more assured over time, which helps round out their attack.

MI New York had a slow start to the tournament, picking up only two wins from their first eight games, but they’ve fought back to reach the Challenger by narrowly beating San Francisco Unicorns by two wickets in the Eliminator.
It hasn’t been a smooth ride, but MI have found a way to stay in the mix and have enough match-winners to pull off an upset on any given day.
In the batting department, Monank Patel has been the most consistent, scoring 401 runs in 11 innings at an average of 36.45 and a strike rate of 145.81.
Quinton de Kock has added 287 runs from 10 innings at the top, keeping things moving at a healthy rate with a strike rate of 141.
Nicholas Pooran has made a big impact in the second half of the group stage with an unbeaten 108 from 60 balls and 62 not out off 47. He’s the one batter opposition bowlers won’t want to see in rhythm.
Michael Bracewell and Kieron Pollard have shown good timing with the bat lately, capable of shifting momentum within a few overs.
The bowling hasn’t always been reliable, though there are a few players who can pick up wickets. Trent Boult has taken 13 and often sets the tone early.
Nosthush Kenjige and Rushil Ugarkar shared five wickets between them in the Eliminator, but the attack as a whole might need a slower pitch to hold back strong batting lineups.

Batters usually enjoy playing at Grand Prairie Stadium thanks to the consistent bounce and a quick outfield that rewards timing. That said, the Eliminator gave us a pitch that played a bit uneven. If we see a similar surface again, fast bowlers might get something early with the new ball, but that advantage should drop off once things settle. For spinners, keeping the line tight and mixing up their pace tends to work better than going after big turn.
The weather in Dallas looks good on match day, with sunshine and warm conditions expected.

Grand Prairie Stadium usually sees plenty of runs, with the average first-innings score hitting 175. This season alone, 11 of the 13 matches played here have seen totals cross 200. The highest total so far belongs to San Francisco Unicorns, who posted 246 for 4 against MI New York. With that in mind, both teams in this game will likely aim for something in the 190 to 200 range to keep the pressure on.
Batting first tends to work better at this ground, so expect both captains to weigh that up before the toss.
Texas Super Kings would have been frustrated with the washout in the Qualifier. Now they get another crack at the finals against MI New York, a team they’ve already beaten twice this season. MI rely heavily on their bowling unit. If they manage to slow down Texas’ top order, they’ll give themselves a real shot at making it through. That said, Texas have looked more balanced overall, and it would be a surprise if they don’t pull this off against a side that won just three out of 10 group matches.
