Whisper it, but Aston Villa are looking good for a top half finish to the season right now.

Unai Emery has whipped those Villa players into shape and they look like they’ll be a handful for any team that players at Villa Park between now and the end of the campaign.

After losing three games on the bounce, they’ve won two of their next three, including an impressive away performance at Everton. Can they continue that form and replace Chelsea in 10th position?

Bournemouth are another side that have shown signs of life lately, although they are clinging onto the hope that they could secure survival this season.

While they remain in the bottom three, they are level on points with two teams above them – they could move up to 14th with victory if other results go their way, showing how tight it is at the foot of the table.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Two wins from their last three games has them on the verge of the top half

Six of their 10 victories have been at home

Reasons to be fearful:

Lost their past four games against Bournemouth

Run the risk of complacency for remainder of the season

Aston Villa have hauled themselves into such a comfortable position, that you wonder if the hunger is still there to achieve anything this season.

With Emery’s arrival, the team quickly improved and lifted themselves far and away above the relegation troubles and have an eight-point buffer between themselves and 12th placed Crystal Palace.

However, with no hope of realistically finishing in a European spot, and with the likes of Chelsea, Fulham, Brentford and others better placed for a top half finish, they run the risk of entering games with little to prove.

Their fans won’t like that, of course, and their home form has been good under Unai Emery. Can they keep that up here, despite going four games without beating Bournemouth?

Star Man – Ollie Watkins

Watkins now has nine league goals for the season, and has scored in six of his last seven for Villa. His pace and improved finishing has proved a vital asset to Unai Emery.

AFC Bournemouth Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Four victories in a row against Aston Villa

One win could lift them out of the bottom three

Reasons to be fearful

Conceded seven goals in their last three games and a league-high 51 this season

Lost six of their last seven away from home

The task for Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil doesn’t get any easier, with just 12 games to go to save their season and their place in the Premier League.

It’s a tough task for a manager who has little experience of this situation. The players appear to be springing into life at just the right time, however.

With wins over Wolves and, remarkably, Liverpool, the Cherries have moved level with the clubs in 16th and 17th position, and could move up to 14th with a win here.

It would be a phenomenal achievement if O’Neil could keep this team up, but he’ll face an energetic and confident Aston Villa here.

Star Man – Philip Billing

Billing’s goal to sink Liverpool last weekend was of vital importance and keeps Bournemouth in the hunt for survival. Can he continue his scoring streak here?

Villa’s intense pressing may be too much for Cherries

Watkins vs Billing upfront is an interesting battle

Bournemouth’s desperation for points will see them create chances

This is the sort of game we often see towards the end of the season, where one team is absolutely desperate for points and the other is safe without too much to play for.

Aston Villa are favourites here, based on their home record and how well they’ve played recently under Unai Emery.

However, if Bournemouth play with enough intensity and believe they can pull themselves out of this mess, they could have a surprise up their sleeves.
