The European heavyweights Belgium open their 2026 World Cup campaign against seven-time AFCON champions Egypt in a fascinating Group G clash on Monday. 

It promises to be a battle of contrasting philosophies, with Belgium looking to dictate play and attack relentlessly, while Egypt will be content to stay compact and strike on the break. 

For the Red Devils, this tournament is a chance to atone for their disappointing exit in Qatar, while the Pharaohs are chasing a first-ever World Cup victory.

The match will be staged at Seattle Stadium, home to the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS side Seattle Sounders. The venue will host six matches during the tournament, including two knockout ties.

Ranked ninth in the world, Belgium arrive at the 2026 World Cup in an unusual position. They are no longer viewed as one of the outright favourites, and the spotlight that once surrounded their golden generation has faded. 

Yet this could be the start of an exciting new era under Rudi Garcia, who took charge following Euro 2024. While veterans such as Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel, Thomas Meunier and Romelu Lukaku remain, a new crop of talent is beginning to take centre stage.

The Red Devils secured automatic qualification by topping their group, although the journey was far from straightforward. They finished just two points ahead of Wales and were held to draws by North Macedonia and Kazakhstan. Nevertheless, a return of 29 goals scored and only seven conceded highlighted the attacking quality still at Garcia's disposal.

Belgium's biggest strength remains their ability to create chances. Their adventurous full-backs, particularly Maxim De Cuyper and Joaquin Seys, provide width and attacking thrust, while the team possesses enough creativity and pace to trouble any defence. 

However, that attacking approach can also leave them vulnerable in transition, especially down the flanks. The defence, led by emerging talents such as Koni De Winter, Zeno Debast and Arthur Theate, is promising but relatively inexperienced at the highest level. There are also questions over the fitness and form of some senior forwards, including Lukaku.

One of the biggest talking points in the squad selection was the omission of Ajax winger Mika Godts. Despite an outstanding domestic campaign)17G+13A), Garcia opted for experience over form, leaving out one of Belgium's most productive young attackers.

Belgium will still lean on experienced figures like Kevin De Bruyne, Leandro Trossard and Thibaut Courtois, but the player to watch is Jeremy Doku. His numbers for Manchester City (5G+GA) this season may not tell the full story, but his pace, directness and ability to beat defenders make him one of the most exciting talents in the squad — the kind of winger who can change a game in an instant.

Team News 

Belgium will be without centre-back Zeno Debast for their opening game, with the defender expected to return later in the tournament. There is better news for Jeremy Doku, however, as his injury scare has eased and he should be available for the opener.

Egypt Preview

Egypt return to the World Cup for the first time since 2018 and only the fourth time in their history. Their best performance remains the Round of 16 appearance in 1934, while their last campaign ended in disappointment with three defeats from three matches despite Mohamed Salah scoring both of their goals. 

This time, however, the Pharaohs arrive with renewed optimism under Hossam Hassan, who has overseen a steady rise since taking charge in 2024.

Qualification was emphatic. Egypt topped their CAF group unbeaten, scoring 26 goals and conceding just twice in eight matches while keeping seven clean sheets. They also impressed at AFCON 2025, reaching the semi-finals and knocking out defending champions Ivory Coast along the way.

Tactically, Egypt are comfortable playing without much possession, relying on quick transitions and the quality of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in attack. The main concern lies in midfield, where they can struggle against sustained pressure. That vulnerability occasionally exposed the defence during AFCON, where they faced  an xGA of 4.8 which wasn't amongst the best in the competition. 

The squad itself reflects a different model from many of Africa's star-studded sides, with a large proportion of players coming from the domestic league. There is also an exciting youth element, with five World Cup debutants included, among them highly rated teenage forward Hamza Abdelkareem, who is currently on loan at Barcelona B.

Key Players 

Mohamed Salah is the one to watch. His season with Liverpool has been disrupted by injuries and a reported fallout with Slot, leaving him with extra motivation heading into the tournament. He showed that hunger at AFCON, where he finished with four goals and an assist. 

With Omar Marmoush alongside him in attack, plus Marwan Attia, Emam Ashour and Ibrahim Adel offering support, Egypt have plenty of talent to build around.

This could be a lively contest, but much depends on Hossam Hassan’s approach. If Egypt sit deep as they did against Senegal in the AFCON semi-final, Belgium’s attacking quality could make life very difficult. 

The Red Devils arrive in excellent form, unbeaten in their last 13 games with nine wins, while Egypt have managed only two victories in their last six. On that basis, the Pharaohs may have to wait a little longer for their first World Cup win.

 Likewise, Belgium are considered favorites to win the match according to bookmakers, with one of the sites backing them to win at odds of 1.65  to Egypt ’s 5.5 and 3.8 for a draw.
