With just two games left in the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup, the spotlight shifts to the first semifinal as Morocco take on the United Arab Emirates on Monday at 8 PM IST. The Atlas Lions arrive unbeaten, fresh off a composed quarterfinal win over Syria, while the UAE—despite an opening-day defeat—come in brimming with belief after stunning defending champions Algeria. With a place in the final at stake, expect a tense and tightly fought contest.

Head-to-head Record: This will be the first meeting between the sides in a competitive match. However, in the friendlies, these two sides have faced off in three matches, with the UAE registering one win and Morocco none.

Morocco Preview

After the heartbreak of the 2021 Arab Cup—where they fell to Algeria on penalties in the quarterfinals—the Atlas Lions turned the page in style, edging past Syria 1-0 last Thursday courtesy the 79th minute winner from Walid Azaro to book their place in the semifinals.

The 1-0 scoreline flatters to be a close contest, but it was anything but close. Morocco ran the game from start to finish, bossing possession (59%) and relentlessly probing the defence with 21 shots—eight of them forcing the goalkeeper into action.

That said, there was some late drama when substitute Mohamed Moufid was sent off while protecting the lead, forcing Morocco to see out the closing minutes with ten men. Still, Sektioui’s side kept their composure, defended smartly, and booked a third Arab Cup semifinal. Should they get past the UAE on Monday, it would mark Morocco’s first final since lifting the trophy in 2012.

Morocco will again look to Oussama Tannane to pull the strings, with the playmaker topping the charts for assists (2) and key passes (8). He’ll be backed by the attacking firepower of Tissoudali and Berkaoui, while Walid Azarou has shown he can step up too after impressing in Tissoudali’s absence last time out.

Morocco  Probable Starting Lineup - Mehdi Benabid (GK), Boulacscout, Soufiane Bouftini, Saadane, Hamza El Moussaoui,  Bach, Zouhzouh, Walid El Karti, Mohamed Rabie Hrimat,  El Berkaoui, Tarik Tissoudali.

United Arab Emirates Preview

The United Arab Emirates head into the semifinal with heavy legs and tired minds after a draining quarterfinal, where they edged past defending champions Algeria 7–6 on penalties—an effort that could test them against a fresh Morocco side.

It wasn’t a dull stalemate either—Al Abyad showed real grit, fighting back from a first-half deficit of 1-0 to force the contest level courtesy Bruno Oliveira goal before holding their nerve in the shootout.

That victory booked UAE a place in just their second-ever Arab Cup semifinal, the first since 1998. On Monday, Al Abyad will once again bank on a sturdy defence—conceding just three goals in their last three games—to blunt Morocco’s firepower by sitting deep while aiming to better  their fourth-place finish from ’98.

Come the semifinals, three Al-Abyad players will be firmly in the spotlight. Al-Meqebaali emerged as the hero against Algeria, producing two vital penalty saves and adding three more crucial stops during normal play.

Meanwhile, Al-Ghassani and Bruno Oliveira have powered the UAE’s attack from the flanks, combining to score four of the team’s six goals so far, making them the primary threats Morocco must look to contain.

UAE Probable Starting Lineup - Meqebaali (GK) ; Meloni,  Pimenta, Ivkovic, Amaral, Yahia Nader, Rashid, Bruno Oliveira, Nicolas Gimenez, Al-Ghassani, Caio.

Morocco enter the semifinal as the tournament’s highest-ranked side, and despite not missing key players, they stayed unbeaten—clear proof of their depth and quality. That firepower could be too much for a UAE side ranked 70th, even after their shock win over Algeria.

Expect a familiar script, with UAE sitting deep and hunting counters, much like they did in the quarters. But with just one goal conceded all tournament and peaking at the right time, the Atlas Lions look well-placed to take control and book their spot in the final.
