After winning 10 out of 12 matches in the league, Manchester United are suffering a mini-dip in form currently having taken just a point from their last two matches, having lost against Sheffield United before playing out a 0-0 with Arsenal at the weekend.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won’t be too worried just yet, but will know that his side must recover their spark quickly or they risk falling even further behind a powerful Manchester City at the top.

The players and fans alike will expect nothing less than 100% in this match, with three points a must.

Southampton are also in the throws of a poor spell of form, though to a great extent than their opponents, having lost their last three matches in the league and enjoying victory just once from their last eight games.

Injuries have played a significant role in The Saints’ campaign so far, though they are now starting to prove costly to their chances of securing European football for next season.

Manchester United FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): DWWLD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Will be confident of overcoming mini dip in form

Overcame Southampton 3-2 earlier in the season

Reasons to be fearful:

Scott McTominay could miss out due to stomach cramps

27 goals conceded is one of the poorer defensive records in the league

United will hope they have learned their lesson from when these two sides met earlier in the season.

The Red Devils came away with three points, courtesy of a brilliant Edinson Cavani brace, but went 2-0 behind with both goals coming from sloppy set-pieces needlessly given away in the first place.

With a player like James Ward-Prowse, who is enjoying his best season in terms of goal contributions, United must take care to avoid giving away set pieces around the penalty area.

They must also ramp up their only intensity, having struggled to make an impression of their last two games, scoring just once and collecting a solitary point.

If they are to keep pace with Manchester City, they must win here.

Star Man – Bruno Fernandes

Has now gone five games without a league goal, but United’s talisman is sure to bounce back with a bang at some point.

Southampton FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): LWWLL

Reasons to be cheerful:

Gave United a great game back in November

Adams had an hour’s rest at the weekend

Reasons to be fearful:

Disallowed goal against Villa will have dented confidence

Four defeats from eight league games shows extent of poor form

Southampton’s poor run of form has seen them go from temporarily topping the table to now sitting in 11th place after just a solitary win from eight games.

Key among that period has been the volume of injuries which Southampton have had to deal with. The likes of Vestergaard, Walker-Peters and Salisu are likely to miss this one out. Danny Ings, who has struggled on and off with injuries this season, has just one goal from his last eight appearances in all competitions.

Despite this, the Saints are likely to give United a tough match here, with the likes of Ward-Prowse pulling the strings in midfield and Che Adams, who only played 30 minutes at the weekend, coming in with fresh legs up front.

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

Has 10 goal involvements already this season, his best ever return at this stage. He played brilliant against United in November.

United are in for a tough game here

     Saints will create goalscoring chances

Result will hinge on United’s attitude and intensity

If Manchester United play as they did against Arsenal and Sheffield United over the past week, they are likely to lose this game.

Their intensity of play must be at a far higher level against a Southampton side who will grow into the game with any sign of weakness from United.

United are favourites to claim three points, but they’ll have to fight hard.
