This is a game will have massive implications at the top of the table, with in-form Newcastle hosting title chasers Arsenal in what is sure to be a thrilling contest.

The Magpies are looking to cement 3rd place this weekend, with Manchester United dropping points in their midweek game against Brighton. Eddie Howe’s team can almost certainly plan for Champions League football next season.

They could yet have a say in where the title ends up this season – only Liverpool have beaten Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Arsenal need to become just the second team to do that this season. It would be some performance if they were to claim victory over the Magpies, and would give them the confidence they need to go all the way.

Having watched Manchester City win their game, there is now a four-point gap between them. They have to win here at all costs.

Newcastle United Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have won their last two home games against Arsenal

Won eight of their last nine in the league

Reasons to be fearful:

Nursing one or two injury concerns, including Saint-Maximin

Will be up against an Arsenal team desperate for victory

Newcastle can almost begin their planning for next season’s Champions League, with Eddie Howe’s men holding onto 3rd place as it stands.

If they lose here, and Manchester United win their game later in the day, they would slip to 4th. It’s enough of an incentive for Eddie Howe’s men to keep their performance levels high here.

They could also have a huge say in where they title ends up this season. Should they beat Arsenal, it would virtually dismiss their chances with Manchester City pulling away.

The Magpies are nursing one or two injury concerns, with Sean Longstaff a doubt and Allan Saint-Maximin only recently back in training.

Regardless, there is such quality in this squad that they will be a match for Arsenal whoever is in the starting line-up.

Star Man – Alexander Isak

Isak is just about holding off Callum Wilson for the starting position right now, although both are in such fine form. They have 25 goals between them this season and one of them is sure to find the net here.

Arsenal FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Still have the best away record in the league this season

Only club to have three forwards with 20+ goal involvements

Reasons to be fearful

Without victory in each of their last three on the road

And they’ve conceded eight goals in those three matches

Like the away trip to Manchester City two weeks ago, Arsenal will have pinpointed this visit to Newcastle as one of their most important fixtures of the season.

They lost that crucial game against City, which in turn has seen them degraded from top spot to 2nd, and another defeat here would surely spell the end of their title race.

Manchester City powered into a four-point lead after their victory against Leeds, and will still have a game in hand when Arsenal finish here. The Gunners have to claim victory at all cost.

Their chances of doing so are in the balance. Yes, they have the best away record of the season, but they haven’t won at Newcastle in two years and they haven’t won any of their last three away games recently.

The loss of William Saliba to injury has massively hurt them at the back, while fellow defender Gabriel faces a late fitness test here.

Star Man – Martin Odegaard

Odegaard has been a shining light for Arsenal this season, with 14 goals and seven assists. His brace against Chelsea in midweek shows that he hasn’t given up the fight yet.

     Possession evenly shared

Two or more goals in the game

Arsenal will come on stronger in the second half

You can expect Newcastle to start fast here, with their home supporters sensing an opportunity to get one over on a team going for the title.

Very few teams come to St James’ Park and control the play these days, and Eddie Howe’s men will fancy their chances of putting the Gunners under pressure from the off.

Arsenal will come on stronger in the second half, but it may not be enough to stop this fantastic Newcastle side.
