Newcastle and Manchester City meet in clash of Premier League’s two richest clubs
Manchester City to win 3-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Newcastle upon Tyne, St James' Park
Bet NowThis is the clash between two similar teams in more ways than one.
Newcastle are the club that City were a decade or so ago - recently taken over by mega-rich owners with a plan to dominate Europe.
Maybe one day, with the amount of money they plan to pump into the club, Newcastle will reach the pinnacle of English football, but for now, it’s City that very much own that position.
With two wins from two to open the season, City are looking as imperious as they ever have. It will seemingly take a miracle to knock them off the top spot this season.
This game comes too soon for Newcastle to challenge City, but maybe in a couple of seasons time, things could go differently.
City are heavy favourites here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Atmosphere at St. James’ Park will be electric
Currently in 5th place and unbeaten
Reasons to be fearful:
Dreadful record against City
Eddie Howe has lost 10 consecutive games against Pep Guardiola
Newcastle will have expected to make a strong start to the season and have done just that, earning four points from their two games so far.
With the investment made up to this point, Newcastle and their fans will be expecting a top half finish. It will be tough, especially considering that this is also the ambition of several other teams.
Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford and others are among the teams who will feel they can push on this season, so competition for places will be like never before.
Against Manchester City, they are likely to lose. That shouldn’t be seen as too much of a negative, as most teams will lose to City this season.
Nevertheless, they will give it a good go and, in front of their home support, may be able to cause one or two problems
Star Man – Callum Wilson
If they can feed this man, they’ll have a chance at scoring. City’s defence, while excellent, is never completely watertight. Wilson often comes alive against the big teams, too.
Reasons to be cheerful
Only lost one of last 29 meetings with Newcastle
Won their last five fixtures against Magpies
Reasons to be fearful
Away atmosphere will be intense
Newcastle are yet to concede a goal this season
Another game, another win for City?
You wonder when you’d ever back against them, considering the form they’re in right now. Opposing teams don’t seem to be able to land a glove on them. Getting the ball off them is hard enough, for starters.
In Erling Haaland, they have the ultimate modern-day striker, a fearless athlete who can terrorise defences in any way he chooses.
He wasn’t at his best in City’s win over Bournemouth last weekend, but what does it matter? City purchased the Norwegian for his goals in tight matches. The most important winners. They will come, without doubt.
Pep Guardiola has a particularly good record against Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. He has won all team of their meetings, the best record in Premier League history.
Can he extend that here?
Star Man – Kevin De Bruyne
The Belgian playmaker was exceptional in the win over Bournemouth last weekend, ending up with a goal and an assist. He is used to running games for City, almost on his own at times, and is likely to be influential here.
City will boss possession as always
Away side will create more chances
Newcastle could have one or two of their own
City have the look of a runaway train, picking up speed and powering through anything in their way.
With the players they have, they can afford to rotate and for one or two to have an off game now and again.
Newcastle don’t have that luxury and everyone needs to be on top of their game to claim anything from this one.
City are the likely victors here.
