The last two or three games have started to separate teams at the bottom of the table, with gaps appearing and one or two clubs starting to pull away.

The likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham and Wolves now look safe, Bournemouth need another couple of wins to be sure, whereas Leeds, Leicester, Everton and Nottingham Forest are fighting for their lives.

Unfortunately for Forest, they appear the most likely, alongside Southampton, to go down right now. Their form has been dreadful, their home advantage has deserted them and confidence is rock bottom.

Brighton will have been bitterly disappointed to lose to Manchester United in the FA Cup Semi Final at the weekend, on penalties no less.

It shows how far this Brighton side have come that they can outplay United at Wembley and be unhappy to go home with nothing. They still have the opportunity to finish this season strongly, however.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Have to play to win here

Gave Liverpool a good run for their money at the weekend

Reasons to be fearful:

Scott McKenna will miss the rest of the season

No wins from their last 11

Nottingham Forest gave a fine account of themselves at the weekend, pushing Liverpool hard and being level on two occasions throughout the game.

It’s at these moments where fans say “if only they could play like that in every game, they’d be safe.” Unfortunately, Forest haven’t for much of the season and they are in real danger now.

Their home form, once their savour, has tailed off in recent weeks. Indeed, the club’s last victory came at the start of February, when life was looking rosy for Steve Cooper’s men up in 13th place.

Now, they seem like favourites to head straight back down to the Championship. They have a tough run-in too, with three of their remaining six games being against top-half teams, and with Chelsea to play too.

They simply have to pick up wins at home if they are to stand any chance.

Star Man – Morgan Gibbs-White

Forest’s record signing hasn’t quite lived up to his billing this season, although he came alive in their game against Liverpool. The midfielder provided an assist before scoring himself.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Were unlucky to lose their FA Cup Semi Final

A win could take them up into 6th

Reasons to be fearful

League form has been inconsistent of late

Could take some time to get over disappointment of the weekend

It will always take some coming back from, when you lose on penalties in unfortunate circumstances.

Brighton showed why they have been one of the best teams of the season at the weekend, and indeed entered their FA Cup Semi Final against Manchester United as favourites. They looked the better team in truth.

However, they were punished for not taking their chances and Manchester United’s penalty taking was assured enough to knock the Seagulls out. They need to recover quickly from disappointment here.

They have as many as three games in hand on the teams above them, meaning that they will launch into 5th if they can win them all.

There is plenty left to achieve for this Brighton side, although with three wins from their last six, they need to improve their consistency.

Star Man – Kaoru Mitoma

The Japanese winger endured a tough afternoon against Manchester United, earning little out of Aaron Wan-Bissaka before missing a key chance near the end. He’s been brilliant this season, however, and will bounce back.

     Brighton will dictate possession

     Forest have to score first

Can Brighton bounce back from heartbreak?

It’s a tough ask for Brighton to bounce back straight away from the disappointment of the weekend, but that’s exactly what they must do if they want to achieve their goals in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest are there for the taking, and with the way that Brighton control the ball, they should be able to pick their way through the home side.

Forest have to make it all about passion and energy here. Can they claim their first win in almost three months?
