After being held by DR Congo in their opening match, tournament favourites Portugal will be eager to make a statement and secure their first win when they face Uzbekistan at the same venue. 

For the World Cup debutants, a 3-1 defeat to Colombia was a harsh introduction to the biggest stage, but this clash with Portugal presents both a daunting challenge and a chance to prove they can compete with the world's elite.

As has often been the case with tournament favourites, Portugal perhaps underestimated their opening opponents in Matchday 1. After João Neves gave Roberto Martínez's side an early lead against DR Congo, it looked like a routine victory was on the cards. 

Instead, Portugal became slow and passive, allowing the Congolese to grow into the game. Once the equaliser arrived, DR Congo retreated into a compact block and Portugal struggled badly, finishing with just one shot on target and an xG of only 0.65.

While Cristiano Ronaldo attracted much criticism, the problems ran deeper than one player. Portugal struggled to create chances against a compact defence, with key creator Bruno Fernandes largely kept quiet until a late effort in stoppage time. 

Their vulnerability from set-pieces also remains a concern, but the biggest question mark surrounds Martínez's reluctance to adapt. If Portugal continue to be this predictable, tougher opponents could punish them far more severely.

Key Players 

Portugal’s midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves and Bruno Fernandes is their biggest strength, but against deep-lying teams they must be more proactive and incisive. And if Ronaldo leads the line, he has to stay involved and make sharper runs to give the attack the edge it needs.

For Uzbekistan, the World Cup debut brought the disappointment of defeat, but the White Wolves showed plenty of spirit against Colombia. They pushed the South Americans hard and, in the end, it was the difference in quality that proved decisive.

The first half was largely one-way traffic, with Uzbekistan managing just one shot and an xG of 0.03. But Fabio Cannavaro's side came alive after the break and showed they are far more than a team content with simply sitting deep. 

Abbosbek Fayzullaev's superbly worked equaliser around the hour mark highlighted their attacking potential, and they eventually finished with an xG of 1.14 and seven attempts on goal. Colombia's class eventually told with two late strikes sealing a 3-1 win.

Given how DR Congo frustrated Portugal, Cannavaro is likely to employ a similar low-block approach. If Uzbekistan can remain disciplined and take their chances on the counter, they may yet have a realistic shot at earning a valuable point.

Much of Uzbekistan's hopes will rest on Abdukodir Khusanov, with the Manchester City defender expected to marshal the back line against Portugal's star-studded attack. At the other end, captain Eldor Shomurodov, the nation's all-time leading scorer with 44 international goals, will have to make the most of the few chances that come his way.

Good teams learn from their mistakes, and Portugal have the quality to do exactly that. They can expect another stubborn, low-block challenge from Uzbekistan, but the key for Roberto Martínez's side will be to make their dominance count and, crucially, maintain the intensity once they get in front.

If they avoid the complacency that cost them against DR Congo, Portugal should have enough quality to secure a convincing victory.
