Duleep Trophy First Round: Key absences and squad changes
Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik have been ruled out of the first round of the Duleep Trophy due to illness. Their absence has led to some changes in the squads: Navdeep Saini has been brought in to replace Siraj in the India B squad, while Gaurav Yadav has been selected to take Malik's place in the India C squad.
Additionally, Ravindra Jadeja has been withdrawn from the India B squad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not provided a specific reason for Jadeja's release, nor have they named a replacement for him.
Player Spotlight: Gaurav Yadav
Gaurav Yadav, a 32-year-old fast bowler, originally played for Madhya Pradesh but switched to Puducherry before the last domestic season. He has been in remarkable form, picking up 41 wickets in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, placing him second on the overall list. He achieved this feat in just 11 innings with an impressive average of 14.58, including five five-wicket hauls and a ten-wicket match haul, which notably dismantled Delhi in the opening round. Over his career, Yadav has been a consistent performer in red-ball cricket, accumulating 141 wickets in 37 first-class matches since his debut in November 2012.
Comebacks and Concerns
Navdeep Saini, who has previously played two Tests for India during the 2020-21 tour of Australia, has an opportunity to make a comeback and catch the selectors' attention ahead of the upcoming Test season. Although he was part of the India A team for two four-day games last season, his performance was underwhelming, failing to take more than one wicket in any of the four innings he bowled.
Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy's participation in the tournament remains uncertain as he is still recovering from sports hernia surgery. The BCCI has stated that his involvement will depend on his fitness closer to the match date.
Tournament Overview
The first round of the Duleep Trophy is set to be played simultaneously in Anantapur and Bengaluru, starting from September 5. Originally a zonal competition, the Duleep Trophy has undergone several format changes over the years. This season, it will be a four-team contest. Since the second round of the tournament coincides with India's home Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19, players selected for the Tests will be replaced in the Duleep Trophy squads.
