Gautam Gambhir Named New Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. On Tuesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made an official announcement through X (formerly known as Twitter). Gambhir will take over the role from India’s Sri Lanka tour, starting on July 27.
"It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr Gautam Gambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward”, Shah posted on X.
"His clear vision for Team India, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey", he further added.
Honoured and Excited: Gautam Gambhir Ready for New Role
Despite not having previous coaching experience, Gambhir was the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach after a successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the IPL 2024.
After the official announcement, the former Indian opener took to social media to express his gratitude to BCCI and expressed his excitement to take over the new role.
“It is an absolute honour to serve my tricolour, my people, my country. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rahul Dravid and his team of support staff for their exemplary run with the team. I am honoured and excited to take on the role of Head Coach for Team India,” Gautam Gambhir wrote on X.
Abhishek Nayar and Vinay Kumar to be part of coaching staff?
According to reports, Gambhir has requested BCCI to bring in his own coaching staff. The former Indian opener wants Abhishek Nayar, the assistant coach at Kolkata Knight Riders, as his batting coach. Meanwhile, he prefers former India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Vinay Kumar as the Indian team's bowling coach.
Abhishek Nayar prevouisly worked as a batting & assitant coach and has a vast expericence of coaching domestic teams. He has helped players like Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik ehance their technqiue. He has been in the limelight for quite sometime now and with Gambhir taking over the helm as the head coach, Abhishek Nayar fits the coaching setup perfectly. Alongside him fomer Indian fast bowler and Karnataka captain famously known as the "Davangere Express" is one of the ideal replacements for Bharat Arun who was the man behind team Inida's remarkable bowling success in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
