England all-rounder Sam Curran has been appointed as the captain of Surrey's men’s team for this year's Vitality Blast, marking a significant milestone in his career. Curran, who has been associated with Surrey since his U15 days, will now be taking over from Chris Jordan, who previously led the team to consecutive Finals Day appearances.
A Promising Leader
Sam Curran’s leadership credentials have been steadily growing. He captained Surrey in three Blast fixtures in 2023, standing in for Chris Jordan, and has now been promoted to a full-time captaincy role. His leadership experience extends beyond domestic cricket, having captained Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and 2024 and leading Desert Vipers to the final of the recent ILT20.
Curran’s impressive performance as England’s player of the match and tournament during the 2022 T20 World Cup further underscores his potential as a future England white-ball captain. However, he has been out of favour since the 2023 World Cup, not featuring in Brendon McCullum's initial white-ball squads, including the recent Champions Trophy, which saw Jos Buttler’s tenure as England captain come to an end.
Exceptional T20 Career
The young all-rounder boasts a remarkable T20 record, having scored over 4,000 runs and collected over 250 wickets with his left-arm seam and swing. Notably, he registered his maiden T20 century during last year's Vitality Blast against Hampshire at the Kia Oval.
Curran was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2019 and has represented England more than 120 times across all formats since making his international debut in 2018. His vast experience and proven skills make him a valuable asset for Surrey as they aim for silverware this season.
Curran’s Vision for Surrey
Expressing his enthusiasm over the new role, Curran stated, "I am deeply honoured and proud to have been appointed Surrey's T20 captain. It is a privilege to lead such a great group of players and to continue representing this iconic club."
He further added, "I am very determined to deliver trophies and try to replicate what has been achieved in the County Championship the last few years to make the Members and fans proud."
Backing from Surrey’s Management
Alec Stewart, Surrey's High Performance Cricket Advisor, praised Curran's leadership qualities, stating, "This is the right time for Sam to take over as the captain with where he's at in his career. It's a great opportunity for him to put his mark on the team and help to take us that one step further to deliver silverware."
Stewart also acknowledged the contributions of Chris Jordan, who will continue to play a significant role in the team both on and off the field.
Upcoming Fixtures and Expectations
Surrey’s first Vitality Blast fixture at the Kia Oval is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, where they will face Hampshire in a double-header matchday. With Curran at the helm, fans are eagerly anticipating a successful campaign that could solidify his credentials as a future England captain.
