Wiaan Mulder takes place of Brydon Carse at SRH

There is just over a fortnight to go until the start of the 2025 IPL on Saturday 22 March and Sunrisers Hyderabad have moved swiftly to replace England's South African born Brydon Carse. The all-format international played in his side's opening game of the Champions Trophy but was unable to completed his full allocation of overs and was then ruled out the rest of the tournament.

In his place will be 27 year old Wiaan Mulder, another South African born player, who impressed with figures of 2/36, 3/25 and 1/48 across his three appearances in the Champions Trophy but was unable to get his country into Sunday's final.

Neither player has previously experienced the IPL but in this article we will look at how the switch will effect SRH's chances in this year's competition.

T20 Career head to head - Carse versus Mulder

  Wickets Strike-rate Runs Strike-rate
Brydon Carse 53 23.7 783 139.57
Wiaan Mulder 67 20.3 2172 132.92

Is Brydon Carse a Big Loss?

A T20 career which reads 53 wickets from 73 games and two half-centuries from 62 innings does not look like that of a player who would be massively missed in the IPL, but Carse has really come on over the last 12 months.

He impressed in England's tour of Pakistan where he made his Test debut and returned figures of 2/74, 2/66, 3/50 and 2/29 on largely batter or spin-friendly surfaces.

Carse then went on to take 18 wickets from his first five innings on the tour of New Zealand before finishing as England's leading dismisser in their 4-1 T20I series defeat against India.

Predominently a bowler, the 29 year old is also capable of lusty blows down the order and he will be missed with both the bat and ball by SRH.

What will Wiaan Mulder Bring to SRH?

Mulder made his international debut in 2017 and is certainly a more experienced player than Carse due to playing in 128 T20 matches.

In some ways, Mulder is a bit of a throwback as he is not a frontline batter or bowler but is still able to make vital contributions - as seen by him taking 3/25 from 7.2 overs against England last weekend and getting the big wicket of Joe Root!

'Bit-part' cricketers like the South African are having something of a renaissance and many claim they are now back in vogue. It will be interesting to see if he will be used much by SRH or will the 'impact-player' option mean he is often left on the sidelines?

Decisions for Captain Cummins

One of the people who will make that call will be captain Pat Cummins and after seeing what Mulder was capable of in the Champions Trophy, he may well be of the view that the South African provides an excellent bowling option.

He may also look at Mulder's batting record and fancy getting a player in the side who has made scores of between 42 and 59 across three seasons of the SA20.

Whether or not he boosts SRH's chances of winning the tournament, currently at 9.00 with cricket online betting site Dafabet, remains to be seen!
