Women's T20 World Cup 2024 relocated from Bangladesh to UAE

The upcoming Women's T20 World Cup will be relocated from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a virtual board meeting on Tuesday. The ten-team tournament is scheduled to commence on October 3, with England facing South Africa in the opening match, and will conclude on October 20.

Bangladesh, still grappling with instability despite a recent government change, was deemed unfit to host the event by the ICC board. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) agreed to the decision to move the tournament to the UAE, though Bangladesh will remain the official host nation.

The Bangladesh government made a final attempt through the United Nations (UN) to retain the tournament, but this effort was unsuccessful. Travel advisories issued by countries such as Australia, India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom against traveling to Bangladesh played a significant role in the decision.

BCB President Gives an Official Update

"It is unfortunate that we won't be hosting the Women's T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, as the BCB was prepared to deliver a memorable event," said ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice. "I’d like to express our gratitude to the BCB for exploring every option to host the event, but given the travel advisories, it was not feasible. However, they will retain the hosting rights, and we look forward to bringing an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future."

ICC Thanks UAE Cricket Board

Allardice also thanked the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host the tournament on behalf of Bangladesh, as well as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their offers of support. The ICC looks forward to holding global events in those countries in 2026.

Earlier media reports had suggested India as a possible alternative host, but the BCCI declined the ICC's offer, leaving the UAE and Sri Lanka as potential alternatives before the final decision was made. The change in the venue now results a drastic change in the betting odds offered by the cricket betting sites.
