Everyone was expecting a competitive three-match ODI series in Sharjah between Afghanistan and South Africa but no-one foresaw such a one-sided opening match with Afghanistan once again confirming that they are a team to be taken seriously in this format of the game.
The Afghans can now complete a famous series win if they are victorious in either this or Sunday's third ODI and after such an impressive bowling performance on Wednesday, South Africa's batters will need to find a better way of taking them on in this game on Friday.
Since reaching the semi-final of last year's ODI World Cup, South Africa's form in this format has been very disappointing but they have no time to sulk as they are up against an energetic and talented Afghanistan side who will be targeting a series win in this second ODI.

Afghanistan have been a rapidly improving side, particularly in white ball cricket, over the last decade and they now look capable of regularly challenging some of the best teams in the world. The bowling trio of Fazalhaq Farooqi (4/35), AM Ghazanfar (3/20) and Rashid Khan (2/30) all caused substantial damage to South Africa's batters on Wednesday and many expect them to do the same in this match, even if they have to work a little harder for dismissals!
But there is still plenty of room for improvement from Afghanistan in this ODI. Star opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for a three-ball duck in the opener and his side did stumble to 15/2 before threatening to implode on 60/4. However, they always have experience in their middle order and if they need to use additional batters in this game then the likes of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan will step up.
Afghanistan will be looking to step up a level in spite of their convincing win in the opening match.

The truth is that South Africa's performance in the opening ODI of the series, particularly with the bat, was way under the required level and the team management will be expecting far more in this second game.
Fortunately for the Proteas, they do have plenty of batting talent, with their top four or Reeza Hendricks, Tony de Zorzi, captain Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs all capable of single-handedly winning a white-ball game of cricket.
Batting at number seven on Wednesday, Wiaan Mulder was the only batter to hold his head up high after hitting 52 runs of South Africa's 106! Another strong performance in this ODI and he could well be pushed up the order.
With the ball, Bjorn Fortuin impressed in spite of Afghanistan requiring just 107. The left-arm spinner and experienced pacer Lungi Ngidi are likely to be the two bowlers capable of producing the goods in this match.

According to the weather forecast, we can expect calm and hot conditions in Sharjah on Thursday afternoon and evening. The temperature will be over 30 degrees from start to finish with humidity levels over 50%.

High TurnThere has only been one ODI score over 350 at this venue in Sharjah and we saw 14 wickets fall for only 213 runs in the opening game of the series. The pitch will be a bit better for batting in this ODI and whoever bats first will be looking to post a total of 250+.
After Afghanistan's victory when chasing on Wednesday, that means that of the last eight ODIs in Sharjah, five have been won by the team fielding first. As a result, we predict that both captains will go out to the middle for the toss with the intention of bowling first if they call correctly.
We certainly expect South Africa to give a better account of themselves in this second ODI but they will need to produce far more with the bat to trouble this strong and exciting Afghanistan side. Our prediction is for an Afghanistan victory.
