Lancashire began their season at the Kia Oval, where they were outclassed by Surrey. Set a daunting 214 to win, the Lightning never recovered from a horror start – Reece Topley removed Keaton Jennings and Matty Hurst in the very first over, leaving them 0 for 2. Although Paul Coughlin (37) and Chris Green (35) showed some defiance with a 62‑run stand, the visitors were eventually bowled out for 154, losing by 59 runs. Captain Keaton Jennings will be desperate for his top order to show far greater resilience on home turf.
Paul Coughlin and Chris Green provided the only resistance of note, sharing an enterprising stand of 62 from 38 balls, but the damage done by that catastrophic start proved too much to overcome. With bat in hand, Coughlin hit three sixes in his 37, and Green made 35 before both fell in the middle overs. It was a performance that will concern a side that reached Finals Day last season.
The batting is built around two key figures. Jennings, the captain, was Lancashire's leading run-scorer in 2025 with 459 runs in the competition, and is the anchor the innings is structured around. The new overseas signing Ben McDermott arrives with significant credentials: he has accumulated over 3,000 runs in the Big Bash League at a strike rate close to 140, including three centuries, and scored 1,138 runs in 44 Blast appearances for Hampshire between 2022 and 2024. He was dismissed cheaply against Surrey, but his quality is not in question.
The bowling attack is where Lancashire carry genuine match-winning potential. James Anderson took 20 wickets at an economy rate of just 7.85 during last year's Blast campaign and extended his county contract into a second year. Luke Wood was Lancashire's leading wicket-taker in 2025 with 22 dismissals, and alongside Anderson gives the Lightning a seam attack most sides in the competition would envy.
The squad is missing Luke Wells, Ajeet Singh Dale, and Arav Shetty through long-term injuries, which stretches the batting depth considerably. A home game against Nottinghamshire represents the perfect opportunity to open their account.

The Outlaws arrive at Emirates Old Trafford without a point after a sobering home opener, going down by seven wickets to Yorkshire at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire were restricted to 167-7, a total that always looked below par on a good surface, and Yorkshire's spinners did the bulk of the damage: Jafer Chohan took 2-26, Dom Bess 2-27, and Moeen Ali 1-19.
The batting, full of talent on paper, failed to click. Joe Clarke was dismissed for a first-ball duck, Duckett made a bright 29 (18) before picking out deep mid-off, and Munsey's 28 off 23 balls promised more than it delivered. Tom Moores looked in good touch making 28 from 19 but could not go on. The story of the innings was of batters getting starts without converting them, and the Outlaws will know they need at least one big score to post a competitive total.
Moores was their leading run-scorer in 2025 with 459 runs, striking at 157, and is the key figure in the middle order alongside Clarke, whose batting has been outstanding in the County Championship this season. South African overseas signing George Linde brings considerable experience to the lower order, having taken over 200 T20 wickets across a career spanning franchise leagues in South Africa, England, the Caribbean, the United States, and Pakistan.
With the ball, debutant left-arm spinner Joe Pocklington offered promise, while new recruit Benny Howell brings vast franchise experience and adds a crafty variation to the Outlaws' attack. The seam options of Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington give the side pace, though both were punished by Yorkshire's batters.
The Outlaws made good strides in 2025 after a disastrous 2024, winning seven matches, but missed out on the quarter-finals. The pressure to return to the knockout stages this year is considerable, and a win at Old Trafford would be an ideal way to get their campaign moving.

Manchester is set for a fine late‑May day on Monday. The forecast indicates clear to partly cloudy skies, with no significant rain expected during the match window. Temperatures will be pleasant for cricket, peaking at around 27°C (81°F) in the afternoon and dropping to a comfortable 16°C (61°F) by the close. Humidity will be moderate, and any breeze is likely to be light. Conditions are therefore ideal for a full, uninterrupted contest.

Emirates Old Trafford has hosted more than 70 T20 matches, making it one of the most familiar Blast venues in the country. The pitch historically offers assistance to seamers with the new ball, providing good bounce and swing in the early overs. As the innings progresses, the surface tends to slow down, bringing spinners into play with turn and variable bounce. A par score at Old Trafford is typically in the region of 160-180, and the ground has a reputation for being a fair contest between bat and ball - neither a belter nor a minefield. Teams batting second have won slightly more often than sides defending, but the gap is narrow enough that the toss is not regarded as decisive.
The match gets underway at 4:00 PM local time, with the floodlights already taking effect under a late‑spring sky. Historically, at Old Trafford, teams have shown a slight preference for bowling first, believing that setting a target allows them to apply scoreboard pressure in front of a parochial home crowd. However, with both batting units showing vulnerability in their openers, the captain who wins the toss may feel inclined to insert the opposition and let the new ball do the talking under the evening lights.
This is a fixture between two sides desperate to bounce back from opening day disappointments. Lancashire’s batting collapse - 0 for 2 and 49 for 5 - will be the fresher wound, and the pressure will be on their top order to prove that horror show was an aberration. The return to familiar conditions at Old Trafford should aid their cause, and the presence of experienced heads like James Anderson and Liam Livingstone adds valuable know-how.
Nottinghamshire, by contrast, looked more composed with the bat but ultimately fell short of a defendable total. Their bowling attack, with the pace of Pennington and Stone complemented by the guile of Linde, arguably looks more balanced on paper. However, the Outlaws have a worrying recent head-to-head record at this ground, having lost three of their last four T20 visits to Manchester by convincing margins.
On balance, Lancashire’s home advantage and the psychological boost of playing on a surface they know intimately should prove decisive. Expect a much-improved batting performance from Jennings and his men, with the experienced Chris Green once again playing a pivotal role in the middle overs. The Lightning to get their season up and running.
