Arsenal continued their fantastic start to the season by beating their closest rivals in London, Tottenham Hotspur, in impressive fashion.

That victory kept them at the top of the Premier League, with a run of seven wins and one defeat from their opening eight games.

They could find themselves 2nd by the time they play this, however, as Manchester City play Southampton 24 hours earlier on. The pressure will be on Arteta’s men to beat one of the strongest teams in the league.

Liverpool are not in the best form right now, but you wouldn’t rule them out of winning this one to kickstart their season for good.

The Reds looked better when they beat Rangers in their midweek Champions League game, although had to make do with a point against Brighton last weekend.

Who can come out on top in this massive clash?

Arsenal FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Victory over Tottenham showed their impressive title credentials

100% winning record at home this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Won just one of their last 14 games against Liverpool

Have played more recently than Liverpool in midweek

Arsenal seem to be ticking all the boxes right now and look a very impressive unit from the top of the pitch to the back.

Every player seems to be at the top of their game and have continued to improve season-on-season. Players such as Xhaka, who haven’t always been crowd favourites, are now reaping the applause.

It is, however, in the really big games where they will be tested this season, Liverpool being one of them. Against the Reds, Arsenal fall short in almost every category in recent seasons.

Just one win from the last 14 games, including four defeats on the bounce and the last two at the Emirates. The Gunners have gone 13 games against Liverpool without a clean sheet, conceding three goals per game on average.

The good news is that Arsenal are a better team themselves these days. They have one of the best defences in the league and a striker who is relishing being the main man.

Star Man – Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal’s frontman was electric once again against Tottenham. He’s now scored in consecutive home games for the Gunners – can he make it three on the bounce?

Liverpool FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Superb record over Arsenal in recent seasons

European form could bring some confidence here

Reasons to be fearful

Without a win from their last two in the league

Conceding three goals against Brighton will be a concern

All is still not quite right at Liverpool, judging by their current league position of 9th.

This season shares similarities to the one before last, where Liverpool lost Van Dijk and others to injury, and just managed to scrape into the top four at the end.

You feel that they will improve before long, of course. They have too many talented players not to.

The Reds looked good in their win over Rangers in the Champions League this week, although it’s safe to say that this Arsenal team will test them defensively a great deal more.

Against Brighton, they conceded three goals in what was a poor defensive performance from the Reds. Should they do the same here, this Arsenal team could run riot.

You still feel that Liverpool have the upper hand because of their big-game experience over the past five years or so.

This squad of players has won multiple trophies in that time, whereas Arsenal are still learning how to get close.

Star Man – Roberto Firmino

Since receiving criticism earlier in the season, the Brazilian has been fantastic. His two goals against Brighton took his tally to five goals in 10 appearances in all competitions.

Could be an end-to-end sort of game

     Goalscorers aplenty in both teams

     Liverpool’s big-game experience to help

Wherever you look here, there are goalscorers all over the pitch.

For Liverpool, you have Salah, Firmino and Diaz. Arsenal have Jesus, Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli.

This game should not be short of goals, but can Liverpool’s defence improve from conceding three last weekend? This is a tough game to call, especially with Arsenal in such great form.

However, Liverpool have all the experience in these sorts of games, not to mention the superior record against Arsenal in recent seasons.
