Bottom club West Ham aiming for first points of season against struggling Aston Villa
Aston Villa to win 1-0
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Birmingham, Villa ParkBet Now
Aston Villa and West Ham are two of the country’s biggest club, with large fanbases and a great history of playing great football.
Right now, they are both struggling at the start of the season, with just one win and three points between them.
Villa have that win to their name, although they have looked even more inconsistent than they did last season. There have been calls for Gerrard’s head this week, following his side’s defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend.
He must turn things around quickly if Villa are to achieve a top half finish this season. It looks unlikely at present.
West Ham have been used to challenging for European places over the past couple of seasons, although they look a million miles away from that right now.
They have made two new signings this week and will be hoping they can spur them on.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Home support will be desperate for a victory
Midweek win in Carabao Cup could inspire them here
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost last four games against West Ham
Conceded six goals in their three games so far
Aston Villa have spent a good deal of money over the past couple of seasons, reinvesting the money they received from the sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City.
It can be argued right now that they have not invested it wisely, considering the lack of progress seen in the Premier League.
Another reason is the poor start Steven Gerrard has had in his start to managerial life in the Premier League. He has 15 defeats from his 32 matches so far, with a win percentage of just 33%.
He appears to have fallen out with club captain Tyrone Mings, although the defender has since returned to the side, and top signing Phillipe Coutinho was left out of the starting line up last weekend.
He badly needs his forward players to fire here, although Villa’s record against West Ham is poor in recent times, losing all of their last four.
Star Man – Ollie Watkins
Scored Villa’s goal against Crystal Palace last weekend and his running behind the lines has been one of the few positives for his side so far.
Reasons to be cheerful
Excellent record against Villa in recent years
Additional signings this week should improve morale in the team
Reasons to be fearful
Haven’t scored so far in three games
Moyes is under pressure as manager
David Moyes has been a fine manager for West Ham, winning 45% of his matches and leading them to two consecutive European finishes in the league.
European football is what West Ham fans believe they deserve, but it will be out of reach this season unless they dramatically improve their form.
Their main challenge right now is to score goals. New signing Gianluca Scamacca is pushing for his first start in the league, having scored twice in their Europa Conference League playoffs. Michail Antonio has been a great servant to West Ham, but it could be time to rotate him out for a while.
The Hammers do have a great record against Villa in recent times, winning their last four meetings over the past couple of seasons.
They could sure do with making that five on the bounce.
Star Man – Gianluca Scamacca
The tall Italian has scored twice in Europe for West Ham already, but is yet to make his first start. Surely Moyes will put him in the line-up here.
Scamacca to start
The team that scores first will win
Can either side keep a clean sheet?
Neither side has kept a clean sheet so far, but at least Villa’s strikers have found their way to goal.
This is more than can be said for West Ham, who are yet to give their fans anything to shout about.
Being at home, Villa are favourites to pull a win out of the bag and if they score first, they should do so.
