Entertaining Brighton take on a Tottenham side looking to bounce back from defeat
Tottenham to win 2-1
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Brighton and Hove, Amex Stadium
Bet NowBrighton may have changed their manager recently but that didn’t stop the players from performing brilliantly against Liverpool last weekend.
In an end-to-end contest, the Seagulls took a 2-0 lead before the Reds came back into it, leading 3-2 with 30 minutes to go. Brighton deservedly snatched a point, however, with Leandro Trossard completing his hattrick.
It was a result that kept them in the top four, especially with Manchester United losing and Chelsea not being close enough to catch them. It’s been a brilliant start to the season for the south-coast club.
Tottenham suffered their first defeat last weekend, losing the game that their fans wanted to win more than any – against their North London rivals Arsenal.
Conte’s men looked short of ideas against an impressive Arsenal team, but it doesn’t detract from the fact that Spurs are still a good team.
They are still in the race near the top of the table and they will look to bounce back here.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Team is still performing well even under new manager
Have won two of their last three against Spurs
Reasons to be fearful:
Moises Caicedo is a fitness concern
Tottenham will be eager to bounce back from defeat
Brighton started life under new manager Roberto De Zerbi in excellent fashion last weekend, pushing Liverpool all the way and taking a point away at Anfield.
For long periods of the game, Brighton were the better team, and the same intensity and quality that was present under Graham Potter was still there for all to see.
It’ll be interesting to see how De Zerbi looks to implement his style of play on the team, considering how well Potter’s style worked for the club.
They have a good recent record against Tottenham, who travel to the Amex Stadium for De Zerbi’s first home game as manager.
They will feel confident about securing another positive result, although they will hope Moises Caicedo passes a late fitness test. The influential midfielder misses training earlier this week.
Star Man – Leandro Trossard
The Belgian attacker earned the rare achievement of scoring a hattrick at Anfield against Liverpool, becoming Brighton’s top scorer this season in the process.
Reasons to be cheerful
Will be eager to bounce back from North London derby defeat
Still only three points behind Man City
Reasons to be fearful
Kulusevski is likely to remain out injured
The death of fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone will be on players’ minds
Tottenham were dealt a heavy blow this week, as respected fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone suddenly died of leukaemia.
Ventrone has been a key part of Antonio Conte’s success over the years, working to improve the physical condition of his players and will be sorely missed.
You wonder if this will be on the players’ minds this weekend and how it might affect their performance.
They are in need of a win, having lost their last Premier League game and only coming away with a point from their midweek Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt.
They remain an excellent team, however. With Kane, Son and Richarlison upfront, you feel that they can score goals against any opponent.
Spurs will find it difficult against Brighton, as they have in the past.
Star Man – Harry Kane
His penalty against Arsenal didn’t help Spurs claim anything in the end, but it shows his good form right now. Seven goals in eight games represents a fine start to the season.
Brighton could edge possession
Both teams to score
You’d expect Spurs to bounce back from defeat
If Brighton are to continue to stay near the top end of the table, these are the sorts of games that they must consistently do well in.
Their results against Manchester United and Liverpool have been great, but new manager De Zerbi won’t want his side to get complacent.
Spurs are a tough team under Conte. While they don’t necessarily play the most attractive football, they know how to win games.
They are favourites to do so here.
Tottenham to win 2-1
