Bournemouth edging towards survival as they host struggling Leeds
Bournemouth 1-1 Leeds
Tournament: Premier League 2022-2023 | Venue: Bournemouth, Vitality Stadium
Bet NowAgainst the odds, Bournemouth now appear to be favourites to remain in the Premier League next season, thanks to the remarkable results Gary O’Neil and his players have earned over the past few weeks.
In midweek, the Cherries went to bottom place Southampton and claimed an impressive victory, becoming their third away victory in a row.
They’ve scored five goals in those three wins, keeping clean sheets in two of them. It means that there is a seven-point gap between themselves and danger.
Leeds, on the other hand, can’t win a game for love nor money at the moment, with three defeats and a draw coming from their past four games.
They looked on track to claim their first win in five in midweek, having taken the lead against Leicester, only for their opponents to bite back with 10 minutes remaining.
The Whites have a huge uphill battle on their hands now.
Reasons to be cheerful:
Three wins from their last four
A strong belief running through the team
Reasons to be fearful:
Lost their last two at home
Conceded six in their last three league games
Unusually for a side fighting near the bottom end of the table, Bournemouth’s away form has been better than their results at the Vitality in recent weeks.
Consecutive wins on their travels have come hand-in-hand with successive defeats at home. Gary O’Neil won’t be overly concerned as long as the points keep accumulating, however.
There is now a strong belief running through the team that they can achieve a position of safety this season, against all odds. They must still host Chelsea and Manchester United, however, so earning points at home here could prove vital.
On the negative side, recent matchwinner Marcus Tavernier was withdrawn with a hamstring issue against Southampton, although it’s not thought to be serious.
Star Man – Philip Billing
It was Tavernier who got the winning goal against Southampton, set up by Dominic Solanke. Billing also plays a crucial role in how Bournemouth get forward and can be a handful for most defences.
Reasons to be cheerful
This is their most winnable fixture for rest of season
Have scored in each of their last eight games
Reasons to be fearful
Dreadful run-in in terms of fixture difficulty
Conceded 14 goals in their last four
Although Leeds currently sit outside of the bottom three, ahead of Leicester by a point, their run-in suggests they are probably favourites to go down this season.
After Bournemouth, they face Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham. This weekend’s fixture is certainly their most winnable and their fans must be worried about their prospects for survival.
Another worrying factor was the substitution of the Colombian attacker Sinisterra, who came off inside the first half after netting the game’s opening goal against Leicester.
Wilfried Gnonto has been overlooked on a number of occasions by Javi Gracia, but could return to the fold here. They must go for the win against Bournemouth, at all costs.
Star Man – Rodrigo
Rodrigo Moreno has been goal shy since his injury layoff, but is still Leeds’ topscorer this season. How his team could do with him going on another good run of form now.
A tense game at the Vitality Stadium
Leeds must be tighter at the back
Bournemouth can clinch survival with victory
Bournemouth can probably be certain of survival if they claim victory here, which would be an astounding achievement for the Cherries.
Gary O’Neil has worked wonders since his appointment, although the job is not quite done just yet.
Leeds have to win this game, simply because their remaining fixtures after this one look tricky to say the least. This time have it in them to score goals, but can they stop them going in at their own end?
