BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC Match Preview & Analysis

Tottenham’s top four hopes suffered another blow in midweek as they were thoroughly defeated by a revived Liverpool side who put three goals past a disappointing Spurs side.

At one stage, Jose Mourinho’s men would have harboured thoughts of winning the league, having sat top of the table for a month or so before Christmas. However, with just two wins coming from a possible eight, they’ve slipped down to 6th, albeit with a game in hand.

Brighton secured their 9th draw of the season in midweek, more than any other side in the league, as they cling onto their four point buffer between them and the relegation zone.

The Seagulls grabbed a point against Fulham, their closest rivals down at the bottom, though must continue to pick up points in their quest for safety.

Teams Preview

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WLWWD

Reasons to be cheerful:

Three wins from five in all competitions

     No fresh injury concerns

Reasons to be fearful:

Haven’t won at home all season in the league

Lost seven of previous nine meetings against Spurs

The positive news is that the teams below Brighton aren’t picking up enough points to suck Brighton down with them just yet. As long as the buffer remains four points, Brighton will be confidence of securing safety.

However, with a tough run of fixtures coming up, including Spurs here, followed by Liverpool next weekend, The Seagulls may feel that they will need to wait for better opportunities to gain points.

They have a poor record over Spurs weighing on their mind, having only won once from their previous nine meetings and losing seven.

While there are no fresh injury concerns, the game will come too soon for Danny Welbeck and Tariq Lamptey, two influential players who will remain absent through injury.

They will aim to break up Spurs’ play and frustrate them as best they can.

Star Man – Leandro Trossard

One of Brighton’s best players going forward, he can cause Spurs problems on the counterattack.

Tottenham Hotspur FC Preview

Form Guide (all comps): WDWWL

Reasons to be cheerful:

     Great record over Brighton

Lost just one of their nine away games in the league this season

Reasons to be fearful:

Will be without star striker Harry Kane for two weeks

Are finding it difficult to win matches currently

Tottenham’s away record has been excellent so far this season, having only lost once on their travels, to Liverpool towards the end of 2020.

Unfortunately, they are struggling to win matches right now, with just three league victories coming from their last 10 games in a run which has seen them slip all the way from top to 6th.

Scoring goals hasn’t necessarily been a problem, though they have only kept three clean sheets during that period, something very uncharacteristic of a Jose Mourinho side.

Son Heung-Min will have to carry the burden up front by himself here, as talisman Harry Kane could be out for up to two weeks with an ankle injury.

Brighton will look to frustrate them here, so Spurs will need to be patient.

Star Man – Son Heung-Min

Has scored three goals in his last three matches without Harry Kane.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION vs TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC Winning Prediction

Spurs should see more of the ball

Brighton will aim to keep the game goalless for as long as possible

Could see Gareth Bale play a role

Mourinho has stated that Gareth Bale won’t be used as a direct replacement for Harry Kane, though the Welshman could be used in some capacity here.

Spurs should have enough firepower even without their talisman, though Brighton (with nine draws) have made it tough for teams to beat them this season.

Even so, Spurs are favourites to claim three points.
