Shaheen Shah Afridi has responded to reports linking Babar Azam with a return to Pakistan’s ODI captaincy, saying: “For now, I am the captain.”
Afridi was asked about his position at a press conference with the captains of the National Champions Cup teams, and whether the Pakistan Cricket Board had confirmed he would continue as captain through the 2027 World Cup. He gave a brief reply and did not say more.
The comments came amid fresh speculation over Pakistan’s leadership structure. Reports have suggested Babar could eventually be handed the leadership across formats, while Babar has recently replaced Shan Masood as Pakistan’s Test captain. Under his tenure, Pakistan managed a 1-1 series draw.
Focus Turns to National Champions Cup and World Cup Depth
Afridi, appointed Pakistan’s ODI captain in October 2025, has also turned his attention to the National Champions Cup, which runs from August 11 to 18 and features Pakistan’s leading domestic players. He said the tournament could help build depth ahead of the World Cup.
“Whenever we go to a World Cup, we face a lot of injuries. In case there are any injuries before the World Cup, we will already have players available. The tournament pool will make it easier for us to find replacements,” Afridi said.
He added: “This tournament will give everyone an opportunity to play according to their respective positions.”
Afridi also said performances in the competition could influence Pakistan’s World Cup planning. “All the players will try to put in good performances. As I said, our focus is on the World Cup. Besides individual performances, the performances and fitness of other players will also be assessed,” he said.
Pakistan have a busy schedule ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, including tri-series commitments and a five-match series in England.
