The highly anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy is just four days away. The thrilling clash between India and Australia will return with new excitement. Before stepping into the series, Team India suffered from two big blows. Captain Rohit Sharma and star opener Shubman Gill are all set to miss the first Test match.
After a while, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is back. Before stepping into the high-voltage series, Team India’s poor form is worrying fans. They are entering into the series after being whitewashed by the Kiwis on their home soil. As the series begins, they face another two setbacks.
The first Test match between India and Australia is all set to be unfolded at the Perth Stadium. Team India captain Rohit Sharma will miss the match. A few days back, the Indian skipper welcomed his second child. Due to this reason, he didn’t travel with the team and will miss the first Test match.
As per reports, he will join the squad before the second Test match. Before the second Test, Team India will lock horns with the Australian Prime Minister’s XI in a two-day pink-ball warm-up game on November 30. Report says, Rohit Sharma will be available for the match. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in the Perth Test.
Gill Will Miss the First Test
Captain Rohit Sharma’s absence is already a setback for the team. In this situation, Team India suffered another big blow. Star opener Shubman Gill is all set to miss the first Test due to a finger injury. Before the first Test match, Team India was scheduled to play a three-day practice match. In that match, Gill sustained the injury.
On the second day of the match, Gill was fielding at the slips. While attempting a low catch, he injured his finger. After that, it was confirmed that he had a fracture in the thumb of the left hand. The BCCI is yet to publish an official statement on Gill’s injury but he can be back before the second Test match.
Who will Fill the Places?
A new concern has been raised after Shubman Gill was ruled out from the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speculation is reviewing who will fill Gill’s place in the playing xi. As Rohit Sharma will also miss the first Test, they need to find an opener and a no 3 batter. They had a few options. KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Eashwaran are there as options for the opener's role. KL Rahul can bat even in the middle order.
Along with them, Devdutt Padikkal who was playing for India A also stayed back in Australia. The left-handed batter made his Test debut earlier this year. In the recently concluded India A tour, he scored 151 runs. Before the series, they faced a heartbreaking defeat gainst New Zealand. For qualifying in the World Test Championship, the series is going to be crucial. Following several setbacks, Team India is aiming a strong comeback.
