Defending champions South Australia took a hammering in their season opener, losing by 131 runs to New South Wales after being bowled out for 157 while chasing 288. The performance was awful across the board, and they'll be desperate to produce something much better in their next outing.
Their batting completely failed them in that first match. Apart from Mackenzie Harvey's 60 from 55 balls, no other batsman managed to make any meaningful score, which is a problem they need to fix immediately.
This batting lineup has plenty of talent, though. Besides Harvey, who topped their run charts last season, South Australia can also call on quality players like Alex Carey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Daniel Drew, all of whom are capable of making their mark on this good batting surface. Carey has been in great touch for his country lately, and we expect him to contribute more than 30 runs in this match.
Their bowling was torn apart in the opening game as New South Wales batsmen attacked them mercilessly to post 288-7. Only Wes Agar (2-44) escaped punishment, while every other bowler was expensive, which doesn't bode well. The one bright spot was Brendan Doggett also taking two wickets, even though he was costly. He's a genuine wicket-taking threat and will need to deliver breakthroughs alongside Lloyd Pope and Jordan Buckingham.

Western Australia have also begun their campaign with defeat, falling to Queensland by two wickets. Their batting unit did well to compile a strong total of 321-9, but the bowling attack couldn't defend it as Queensland scraped home with five balls to spare.
The loss aside, Western Australia can draw plenty of encouragement from this match, particularly how their batsmen performed. Opener Joel Curtis played beautifully for his 116 from 108 deliveries. Sam Whiteman also made a valuable contribution, hammering 83 from 83 balls.
Moving forward, Western Australia will want good scores from Cameron Bancroft, Ashton Turner, and Hilton Cartwright. Captain Turner topped their run charts last season and should produce the goods again. Cartwright, meanwhile, smashed 148 runs from just three appearances, proving how destructive he becomes once settled.
The bowling was disappointing in their opener, with only Joel Paris standing out after taking 3-40 from his 10 overs. Bryce Jackson and Liam Haskett both grabbed two wickets each, but went for too many runs. Jackson is usually reliable, though, having been their leading wicket taker last season, so we expect him to bounce back here.

Karen Rolton Oval is known for its hard, true surface that favors batters who play straight and along the ground. Early movement for seamers is possible with the new ball, but the pitch quickly settles into a consistent batting paradise. The outfield is fast, so even well-timed pushes can race to the boundary, while the shorter straight boundaries reward aggressive strokeplay. Spinners may find some grip in the middle overs, but the conditions generally suit batsmen who can build innings.
The weather forecast shows low clouds over Adelaide, but there’s no chance of rain, so we will get a full game.
A total around 280-300 is often competitive at the Karen Rolton Oval, and the team batting first will aim to set a challenging target under the clear Adelaide skies.
This is usually a great batting deck, and we expect the toss-winning captain to bat first on a clear day, to try and put on an above-par total.
Both South Australia and Western Australia have suffered defeats in their opening games and will be itching to get some winning momentum back. Defending champions South Australia’s performance in the opener was poor overall, but they are a better team than that, and we expect them to bounce back here. Meanwhile, Western Australia have a solid batting unit, but their bowling seems lackluster. We are expecting a hard-fought contest, but South Australia should prevail, given the overall quality in their ranks.
South Australia are our picks for the winners of this game.
