Both teams have booked their berths in the qualifiers, but the job is not done yet. There’s still something big to fight for. An opportunity for a second-place finish beckons for Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers at the Perth Stadium on Tuesday night, who’re coming off a win in their previous games.
This should be a cracker of a contest for two reasons. One, both teams are going to be locking horns for the first time this BBL season. And two, a second-place finish is guaranteed for the winning team, and both the teams will be raring to have a go at each other knowing that the all-important win which gives them another shot at making it through to the finale.
Both teams will be prepared to throw everything they got at each other, just like two pound-to-pound pugilists having a go at each other, in what could turn out to be a high intensity battle.

Perth Scorchers sealed a spot for the knockout stages of BBL13, defeating Brisbane Heat in front of the home crowd at the Perth Stadium. In doing so, they made sure the Heat couldn’t go through to qualifiers undefeated. Their job is far from finished, as they still have a strong Sydney Sixers challenge to negotiate with.
With the second-place finish on the line, Perth Scorchers are well aware that their opponents will be coming hard at them. They’ll not be able to field their strongest team, having lost a few players recently- pace spearhead Jhye Richardson to injury, opener Zak Crawley to England duty and middle order basher Laurie Evans to his ILT20 commitments. They have now pressed the panic button by signing opener Marcus Harris as a local replacement player in a bid to reinforce their batting ranks, but they know they’ll have to make do with whatever resources they have at their disposal.
Cooper Connolly moving down the order has paid great dividends, helping the Scorchers to pack their lower middle order with some heavy hitters like Nick Hobson, who whacked two fours and four sixes against the Heat on his way to a quickfire 48 from 30.
Their bowling unit is as good as it has ever been, with all five bowlers in the attack in great nick. BBL veteran Andrew Tye and Lance Morris shared 7 wickets among them, while Jason Behrendorff and Aaron Hardie kept things in check during the middle overs with some disciplined bowling.

Sydney Sixers qualifying through to playoffs is a formality in BBL. As one of the most consistent teams in the history of the tournament, they’ve made it a habit to finish in the top four. The last time they finished outside of the top four was in 2017/18 season, which is a good six seasons ago. In fact, they have never failed to finish in the top two in the last four seasons going back to 2018/19. That’s some feat.
They will want to keep that track record intact and look to sign off this year’s group stages with a win, making it five seasons on the trot where they’ve finished in the top two. Facing the Scorchers in their own backyard is a daunting challenge, but they’ll be equal to the task. They were ruthless against the Stars two games ago, and managed to somehow pick up a win against a tentative Thunder side which had no answers to spinner Steve O’Keefe who picked up three crucial wickets to set up a 19-run victory.
With Steve Smith gone, they may send Josh Phillippe back up top to open the innings, leaving the middle order spread too thin. Moises Henriques, in particular, has been disappointing this season and his stats read poorly (126 runs from 8 games at 20.00 Average and 103 SR). The Sixers desperately need their captain firing with the bat if they are to go deep in the backend of the tournament.

The conditions here have been quite favourable to bat this season. In the four completed matches here so far, the team batting first has gone on to score 160 runs every single time. Sticking to line and length is key in such nice batting conditions where batsmen will make you pay if you err. Weather reports are encouraging, so a full match is on the cards without any rain delay.

Minimal TurnThe match is going to be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth, where the home team has won 4 out of 4. They made short work of the Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers, and turned things around miraculously after being put on the backfoot by the Melbourne Renegades.
Perth Scorchers have notched up 3 wins in 4 matches batting first at this venue, so they’ll gleefully choose to bat again if they win the flip.
Perth Scorchers go up against Sydney Sixers for bragging rights for the second spot on the ladder. In the recent past, the men in Orange have dominated the men in magenta, both home and away. And we reckon the Scorchers will register another win at home this season.>
