Western Australia and Queensland begin their Sheffield Shield 2026–27 campaigns against each other at the WACA Ground in Perth, with the four-day encounter beginning on October 8. Both sides enter the opening round with a point to prove after not being able to make finals in the last season.
Queensland enjoyed the stronger 2025–26 campaign, finishing third with 37.38 points after three wins, four defeats and three draws. Western Australia endured a difficult season, finishing sixth with 22.15 points after winning only one of their 10 matches.
Interestingly, that solitary WA victory came against Queensland at this venue. Both sides begin the new campaign with significant personnel changes and several leading players unavailable because of Australian commitments. WA also start a new chapter under red-ball captain Aaron Hardie and head coach Beau Casson, while Queensland begin life under new coach James Hopes.
Can Western Australia repeat their WACA success, or will Queensland avenge last season’s dramatic defeat?

Western Australia will be looking for a significant improvement after a disappointing 2025–26 Sheffield Shield campaign. They finished sixth on the table, managing only one victory from 10 matches, alongside five defeats and four draws. Their batting was a particular concern, with WA recording the lowest average first-innings total in the competition at 228.
WA’s only victory last season came against Queensland at the WACA. After Queensland made 390, WA declared on 322/7 before Corey Rocchiccioli took 5/47 to leave them chasing 272. The match went to the final wicket, with Rocchiccioli and Cameron Gannon adding an unbeaten 23 to secure a dramatic one-wicket victory.
Despite the difficult season, several WA players impressed. Cameron Bancroft led the batting with 674 runs at 33.70, while Aaron Hardie scored 436 and Sam Whiteman 432. With the ball, Corey Rocchiccioli took 38 wickets at 28.10, including two five-wicket hauls.
WA enter the new season with Aaron Hardie as red-ball captain and Beau Casson as head coach, supported by an experienced core and several younger players. They begin 2026–27 against the Queensland side they defeated for their only win last season. With a reshaped squad, WA will hope to start their new campaign strongly at home.

Queensland enter the 2026–27 Sheffield Shield looking to build on two competitive seasons. They finished third in 2025–26 with 37.38 points, recording three wins, four defeats and three draws. New head coach James Hopes therefore inherits a side capable of challenging near the top of the table.
Several players enjoyed productive campaigns last season. Marnus Labuschagne led Queensland with 525 runs, followed by Matthew Renshaw with 499, Lachlan Hearne with 431 and Jack Clayton with 418. With the ball, Mitchell Swepson led the way with 33 wickets, while Michael Neser took 26, Tom Straker 17 and Xavier Bartlett 13.
There have been important changes since then. Usman Khawaja has retired, while Gannon has returned to Queensland after taking 42 Shield wickets for WA last season. The Bulls have also added Adam Zampa and continue to develop younger players including Jem Ryan, Tom Straker and Hugh Weibgen.
Queensland will be without Labuschagne, Renshaw and Neser for the season opener due to Australia’s Test commitments. Swepson will captain the side, while Bartlett, Gannon, Clayton, Hearne and Jimmy Peirson become particularly important. Despite fielding a younger side, Queensland retain considerable bowling depth and will be determined to avenge last season’s one-wicket defeat and begin their new campaign strongly at the WACA.

The weather at the WACA Ground, Perth, on October 8 is expected to be cool and cloudy. The temperature should range between a high of around 18°C and a low of 12°C. Rain could cause interruptions, particularly on the opening day. Conditions could make this a challenging start to the Sheffield Shield encounter.

The venue of the match is the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground (WACA Ground), Perth. One of Australia’s most iconic cricket grounds, the venue has more than 130 years of cricketing history. The WACA has traditionally been renowned for pace and steep bounce, making it particularly attractive to fast bowlers. Historical Test figures show an average first-innings score of 316. For this Shield encounter, particularly with potentially helpful early conditions, a first-innings total of around 300–320 should be competitive.
The WACA Ground offers considerable assistance to fast bowlers, particularly when there is freshness and moisture in the surface. Historical Test numbers are almost evenly split, with teams batting first winning 19 matches and teams bowling first winning 20. The team winning the toss should bowl first here.
Queensland finished third last season with 37.38 points, significantly ahead of Western Australia, who finished sixth with 22.15. However, WA’s only victory of the campaign came against Queensland at this venue, and home conditions give them an important advantage. Both teams are missing several Australian representatives, although Queensland retain a strong attack featuring Mitchell Swepson, Xavier Bartlett and former WA quick Cameron Gannon. With the WACA conditions and last season’s result in their favour, and with home advantage, Western Australia have a narrow edge.
We predict that Western Australia will defeat Queensland.
